I'm attempting to downgrade my laptop from Windows 8.1 Pro to Windows 7 64-bit. I have a Fujitsu U904; since it's an ultrabook there's no DVD drive.. and I have no access to an external (last resort, I'll buy one).

I'm attempting to use the guide here: UEFI Bootable USB Flash Drive - Create in Windows and I'm stuck.

On the last bit, where it mentions the step you must do only if you are creating a Windows 7 64bit uefi bootable usb, my folder structure doesn't match the one in the images.

This bit: C) In 7-Zip, navigate to the sources\install.wim\1\Windows\Boot\EFI\bootmgfw.efi on the USB flash drive, select the bootmgfw.efi file, copy it to your desktop, click/tap on OK, and close 7-Zip.

My sources folder includes:

dlmanifests
en-us
etwproviders
inf
license
replacementmanifests
servicing
servicingstackmisc

And a litany of individual files.

Any suggestions on this or where to proceed?

I've tried with rufus and the windows 7 usb tool (the one from the microsoftstore.com), and the laptop will not boot. The windows 7 tool states it couldn't made the usb drive bootable, and when using a drive imaged with rufus, the laptop says boot error (bios error; not win 7's install app)

You do not need this option if you are using a Rufus program.

Here is info about UEFI Boot Mode (installing using the GPT partition style) and Legacy BIOS Boot Mode (installing using the MBR partition style): link

2. How to create UEFI Boot Mode compatible Windows 7/8 64-bit USB flash drive, which is only bootable in UEFI Boot Mode.

- Download and run the Rufus program.
- Connect your USB flash drive.
- Click on the browse icon and select your Windows 7/8 64-bit ISO image file.
- Under Partition scheme and target system type, select GPT partition scheme for UEFI computer.
- Under File system, select FAT32.
- The default Cluster size setting is automatically detected, so do not change the setting.
- Click on Start button.

3. How to create Legacy BIOS Boot Mode compatible Windows 7/8 32/64-bit USB flash drive, which is only bootable in Legacy BIOS Boot Mode.

- Download and run the Rufus program.
- Connect your USB flash drive.
- Click on the browse icon and select your Windows 7/8 32/64-bit ISO image file.
- Under Partition scheme and target system type, select MBR partition scheme for BIOS or UEFI computers.
- Under File system, select NTFS.
- The default Cluster size setting is automatically detected, so do not change the setting.
- Click on Start button.

Note: If you have an OEM PC that came with Windows 8 64-bit preinstalled and you want to install Windows 7 64-bit, then you must disable Secure Boot, because Secure Boot is not compatible with Windows 7. But if Windows 7 64-bit installation does not succeed in UEFI Boot Mode, try installing Windows 7 in Legacy BIOS Boot Mode.
