Creating multiboot system

If I purchase the RETAIL Windows 7 Upgrade:

1. On a system with Windows XP, can I install the upgrade into a 2nd partition to create a multiboot Windows XP/Windows 7 system? I do have retail Windows XP Pro media full version.

2. On a system with Vista, can I install the upgrade into a 2nd partition to create a multiboot Vista/Windows 7 system? I do not have Vista on media, it was pre-installed on the system.

3. On a notebook computer running Vista, should I choose to do so, could I install Windows 7 over Vista? Might I get into trouble due to proprietary notebook drivers?

4. On a notebook computer running Vista, should I choose to do so, could I uninstall Vista and then install the Windows 7 upgrade? Might I get into trouble due to proprietary notebook drivers? Also, since I do not have Vista on media, how would I prove that I qualify for the Windows 7 Upgrade?

It's early days yet - no one has an upgrade disc to try.

From what I understand so far - The 7 installer will recognize you already have a qualifying version of windows on the hard drive.

If you do not have that installed, apparently, you can put a cd/dvd in the drive of 2000 or XP or Vista when the 7 installer asks.

Another way is to do a double install - we believe this will work with 7 also.

You might need to download the drivers from your notebook manufacturer onto a cd before you start .

I assume you will be getting the pre order deal? Premium or Pro Editions only on that deal.

I doubt that I'll go for the pre-order deal, but seeing the deal made me ask my questions.

I am planning on building an XP system using a retail version of XP Pro. To that system, I want to add Windows 7 to have a multiboot system. I was hoping to be able to use a Windows 7 Upgrade disk to do this.

On the Vista notebook, I plan on keeping Vista so I'd have a Vista system on which to test, but I might wish to add Windows 7 as a 2nd OS, aqain using upgrade media.

MSFT will have to answer these questions.

The pre-order info seems to indicate that an upgrade disk has to overwrite Windows XP. That's ridiculous!

You could install 7 from the upgrade - before you install XP - just pop the XP cd in the drive when it asks.

Then install XP after on another partition.

AFAIK, earlier OS MUST be intalled before newer OS.
Has MSFT ever documented that XP can be installed AFTER Vista or Windows 7?

Hi Howard,

Having had a quick look at your site - I was mildly surprised you hadn't come across it before.

I don't have a link re MSFT, but there are numerous tutorials - including one on this site about installing XP after 7:

One of the members here phoned MS recently and was informed that
cd/ dvd of a qualifying version e.g. XP could be used, as I mentioned earlier.

As you have the XP media, I see no reason why you couldn't use the 7 upgrade media to achieve any of the goals in your fist post.

Whether continuing to run the existing installation as well as the upgrade version is within the EULA depends on the terms.

One piece of advice - don't *uninstall* Vista - upgrade.
