Creating VHDs, is it safe?

Ok so I just found out about Windows 7 feature about creating VHDs (Actually IIRC you could do this in Vista, but I don't have my own Vista machine) and using them as virtual hard drives. Is it safe to do this? I won't mess up my own hard drive by doing this? Disk Management is a very scary place to me (It has been ever since my brother formatted his external drive by accident, he should have made backups though (Now that I think of it that was his backup for his system on XP) so I usually don't like to even look at it.). I know how to create one (I think, I will brush up on youtube real quick). I guess what I'm saying is, this is actually safe and I don't need to prep or anything the system right? Also would I be able to use this in a VM on VMware?

P.S. Sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum. To me this seems like Virtualization.

Thanks
RJ

yup your bang on there, a VHD is just a virtual hard drive, it will take up the space on your disk, but effectively its just another file that can be read by VMware etc.
