I'm not 100% but I think you need 2 cards with the same GPU and similar clocks otherwise your better card will be underclocked to the weaker one.

I'm quite sure you can only Crossfire cards from the same family, such as you'd only be able to Crossfire your 3870 with another 3000 series cards.

It won't work. As said above the cards have to be in the "same family". Here is a compatibility chart from ATI/AMD.
