Curious about new little quirk

I have recently downloaded two programs (Belarc Advisor, Advanced System Care Pro) that when run from the downloaded file (pre re-boot) both showed my (Gateway NV78 laptop) computer as running XP. The only OS ever near this computer has been the OEM Windows 7 Home Premium. After system reboot both show Windows 7. Since this is Home Premiuum there is no XP mode and the UAC has no XP boxes checked either. Initially with Belarc, I removed (with Revo uninstaller) and downloaded again (5 complete cycles) with the same result. Run from the download XP appears as OS. After system reboot OS appears as Windows 7. Just curious if anyone has any ideas as to how this is occurring?
I had numerous communications with Belarc before ASC Pro was downloaded. They were lost and after the same results occurred in downloading ASC Pro, it was fairly obvious it was not their software. Thanks in advance for any ideas!

Hello!

I just wanted to give you a quick heads up that someone will be with you from 7Fs BSOD team. There's only a couple of them and BSODs can be tricky business.

Hang tight!

thanks for somebodies reply

Jelyman,
Thanks for your reply. While this started for me as just a weired curiosity, after thinking W7 was the most staple Windows OS I had ever seen; as a new member I am a bit confronted as to all the BSOD on this board.
I understand that BSOD is a higher priority. It would be with me also. I just did not know where else to post this in SevenForums. I totally understand that every OS has it's own imperfections, and after Windows ME in a prior life, W7 is joy. ME probably made me a little too anal about maintenance, but it has payed dividends in the long run.
The above mentioned 'curiosity' was just that. As various people have pointed out on other forums when discussing this particular topic, W7 is not perfect. Several similar issues have been pointed out. Not game stoppers, just weirdness.
In conclusion, I wished all of my other computers with different Windows OSes were operating this well. If anybody there ever has any additions that would be fantastic, but not necessary, as I am operating at a good level currently. Thanks.
Sincerely,
Dibbo

Honestly, I didn't read it that closely, I just wanted to make sure you didn't feel left or that someone wasn't paying attention to your dilemma.

After reading it some more, I'm very much wanting a screenshot of this.

The only thing I can think of is that the software may require a reboot before it fully understands the environment that its in. As I'm writing this, I downloaded Belarc Advisor and am testing it myself (without a restart) to see if it does it for me. My environment is not OEM like yours and that may be what's up in your case.

Update: the scan is done and I've got Windows 7 as my OS.

Question: Did you by chance upgrade from Windows XP on that machine?

Jelyman,

Sorry for the slow response. I missed your second reply over the Holidays. Listed below are two screenshots. Scan 1 is the picture from the 'run' file. Scan 2 is from after restart.

To answer your last question first, this laptop has never seen any form of XP since I purchased it as the original purchaser. Windows 7 is OEM.

Since we have progressed to this point I will highlight some of initial points that you will now be able to see for yourself.

1) In scan 1 a 'System Security Status' number was generated. For the purpose of this discussion, as noted in the same location in scan 2, this is only possible in XP Pro (or higher) OS.

2) In scan 1 'Microsoft Security Updates' listed 7 missing. In scan 2 this 'up-to-date'. This is with no changes between scans. Also although you can not see it in these screenshots, the security updates are listed at the end of each scan and are totally different between the two files.

3) And of course the most obvious issue is the listing of Windows XP Media Center Edition Service Pack 2 (build 2600) in the scan 1 OS.

One other note, as this is Home Premium, no xp mode function exists, and I checked the UAC and no where are xp mode boxes checked.

Hope this helps. Any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask. Thanks.

I'm stumped. The only thing I can think of at this point is when Dell built the image for the machine, there was something about XP MCE they put in there. I really can't explain this one any other way.

Jelyman,

Thanks for your efforts and thoughts. Not sure where this is going to go, but if I ever get to an answer, I will pass it on.
