Cursed unidentified network - Win 7

Sorry folks....here we go again. I haven't been lazy, I have tried everything I can short of taking a shower with the laptop.

Win 7, my internet connection was fine for a couple of weeks, then I came across the cursed unidentified network. It is the only network I have, and is connected by cable to my modem.

I have tried flushing everything (bar laptop), renewing ip's, theres no french speaking problems (bonjour), ....I have read lots and tried all on here and other forums. Enable/disable, uninstall/reinstall, command prompt this and that.

I have spoken to HP support for two hours to no avail. After it initially started I got it back by changing public network to home network and re-booting. But I don't actually think that was it, and I think maybe it was just triggering another event. As such, I have been trying to solve this for 8 hours today....to no avail. Note here, whatever I set my network to (HOME/WORK) windows changes it back to public eventually (usually straight away).

All I can try and do is tell you anything funny I have noticed. If i manually input IP address etc in my adapter settings, it always drops the default gateway after rebooting. Saying this, i am not sure if i have to reboot after entering it, and if I don't, i still can't get a connection.
I managed to do an ipconfig /release at some stage, and it hung when trying to /renew. Then through an error something like: couldn’t contact dhcp server. (remembering I am swapping this hard wired connection to a XP laptop with no hassles at all). Now most of the time when I try to /release, I am told “The operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation”.
HOLD THE PHONE. I started writing this last night, and got up this morning and now I can connect. But I need to solve this, I spent 8 hours trying to connect yesterday. So, while connected here is my ipconfig;

Right. So i go back into my adapter settings, and copying given ipconfig information, manually set the ipconfig for IPv4. Result? No internet access and unidentified network again. Go back and check information I entered, and the is no info in Default Gateway again? This, without rebooting? I'm lost. Switch it back to auto-config, and got internet access, but it has changed my network to public, after i had just set it to home.


I don’t know if any of this helps, but I would appreciate some to solve this intermittent problem. And I apologise that I am no computer technician, but with the help of the internet can usually solve my problems. So therefore I am sorry if I am missing information anyone needs.

What happens if you chose Work instead of Home? Do you get the same results?

Also try disabling IPV6, see if that makes a difference?

Control Panel, Network and Sharing Center.
To the right of Network, click on Local Area Connection.
Click on the Properties button.
Uncheck IPV6 then click OK.

Reboot and see what happens.

Hi, and thanks for your reply.

It doesn't matter what I set the network to, and IPv6 is turned off, and was when I ran ipconfig /all. I see it came back with an address for IPv6 but with no default gateway. I am not sure if thats what you should expect when it is turned off.

Sorry, i think the dropping of the network chosen happens when it can't connect to the net, and nearly everytime i reboot it sets it to Public. I don't know much about it, but when i can't connect to the net it doesn't seem to matter what my network is set too.

Is there a reason it drops the default gateway when i set it manually? As this seems a fix for a lot of people. But i set it before, and went back into the settings without re-booting, and there was nothing entered in there?

Connection gone again. Just checked and I can't even connect to my modem. So no-one can tell me why it drops the default gateway immediately after i change it and push OK?

I have managed to get it to keep default gateway, but.....found that the problem is whenever the system goes to sleep or hibernates. EVERY time it does either, it loses the internet connection and it doesn't matter what I do, it will not connect again until it feels like it. Here is ipconfig after it was connected to net, went to sleep, woke again and wouldn't connect;

You do realize that both machines have the same IP address?? And DHCP is off on one of the machines?

Just a thought.

Another note:

You need to turn off or blank out:

DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : home

That should not be in there. Remove home

the ip address will be the same i gather, as it is just going through a hard-wired dsl modem (sorry...i don't know much about these things). so i just switch the cable over

the "dns suffix search list", came from the machine that is working fine?
