Might help to know what some of your system specifics are; for instance, laptop? Desktop? Mouse? Touchpad?

Usually, settings for mouse/cursor behavior, like what you are describing, are features that can be turned on or off by looking in Control Panel>Mouse.

With laptop touchpads in particular, taping the touchpad can result in the behavior you are describing, i.e. launching things unintentionally.

Other Info
This machine was given to me when my dad bought a new computer. I keep throwing upgrades at it and it keeps on ticking. Think I've done everything to it that can be done outside a PSU upgrade so I can run an even BETTER GPU.
Is this a laptop, if it is it sounds like the touch pad does not have the correct driver, there is dirt/dust behind the touch pad or the case may be pressing onto part of the touch pad causing your problems. Have you tried a usb mouse if not give it a go to see what happens, then report back.
