Custom Made Sig and Avatar [11]

I had a visitor this afternoon while I was mucking around with Photo-Shop. He noticed what I
was trying to do, and also noticed that I had this thread and its counterpart in EightForums
open looking for ideas, templates and some decent logos etc.

Now, this bloke has a Diploma in networking, but as a user, his skills are, at best, average. He
mentioned that he'd always wanted to be able to use a program like PS, but that their sheer
complexity and prohibitively high cost put him off.

So I loaded up a template that I'd found on here (or maybe EightForums) and started to take
him through what I was doing. As soon as he saw me creating layers he said that was where
he'd been going wrong, and wanted me to show him how I did it.

I did so, he had a bit of a go himself, and when he left here he had a big dose of enthusiasm
and ideas, the URL of Adobe's CS2 download site, and a PDF copy of 'Photo-Shop CS2 for
Dummies' with him.

It looks like this 'Photo-Shopping' disease may be contagious...

So, well done, SevenForums, you have had a positive influence and given some good ideas
to yet another happy user.

**Oh, here's the quick & dirty 'sig' we knocked together as I was explaining layers to him.
It turned out so good (clean and airy, not cluttered and cramped) that I decided to modify
it slightly and actually use it on one of my forums.**

Yes graphics is very addictive Wenda. I used to spend hours and hours a day fiddling with my own pictures then started trying creating sigs and wallpapers. I finally got around to fixing up an old family photo which had several folds and wrinkles in it.

So far, I've just been experimenting, and seeing what does what. I've trashed quite
a few projects already by getting too ambitious. But I will keep practicing, and will
get there in the end. Bear in mind that I have no formal training in this aspect of
computing, so am basically learning from 'scratch'.

At this stage, at least in respect of what I am game to post, I'm going on the 'KISS'
principle, and will work up to taking on more complex tasks as I gain more expertise
and confidence. The last thing I want is for people to think 'Oh God, here's Wenda
with more rubbish' whenever I post something.

Meanwhile, your advice, and that of others, is more than welcome.

Keep posting Wenda. That one is better. Maybe a bit advanced yet but if you could extract the figure from the background it would look better.

BTW. I only started this last year and made all the same mistakes. It's just a matter of practice. I found that YouTube is a great source of tutorials on all aspects of digital art.

Thanks for your advice and encouragement, Kado. Yes I have checked a couple of the YouTube
clips out, and the ones I looked at seemed to be very useful but my internet plan has a very low
monthly limit, so I must ration myself somewhat.

I've found my copy of 'Photo-Shop CS2 for Dummies' to be very helpful, I have it on my tablet as a
PDF file so I can 'study' wherever I happen to be. I also have 'Photo-Shop CS5 for Dummies' in PDF
format, and a paper copy of a Photo-Shop CS3 user manual as well, they'll come in handy for the
odd hint and/or tip.

My inspiration when I picked up CS2 and started this was my admiration of the work that guys like
Archie and the others do, coupled with me wondering 'could I learn how to do that?'. My ambition
was simply to become 'good' enough to be able to post a couple of examples of my work, and not
be laughed off the forum (I've seen it happen, not here tho), no more than that. And Photo-Shop
being the complex program that it is, with a supposedly very steep learning-curve, very nearly put
me off altogether. It seems now, though, that I'm learning something new every time I run the
program.

But the encouragement and advice I've received, and the laughter that didn't happen, have inspired
me to keep 'at it' and learn more. Thanks again, people, for not dissolving in gales of mirth at my
'newbie' efforts, and for giving me some valuable advice and the encouragement and incentive to
continue. I've now done a new 'sig' for each forum of which I'm a member, and they've all gone
over rather well.
