thanks nommy, the cartoon effect was what i was after,
the design was largely based around this excellent image made by sohaib1090 on deviant art.
its Stark's keyboard, which i thought was really appropriate for a computer forum

I'd love to try my hand at making my own sig but where on earth do I get the forum's official logo, such as the one at the top of the page? I can resize it and handle anything else, as I had made a sig ages ago at the Folding@Home forum.

You can right click on the logo and Save As. It has a transparent background in the Seven Blue skin. Or...
