With your EDU email you can get 3ds max and other Autodesk programs like Maya and Autocad for free. The cool extensions like V-ray and PheonixFD are free as demos. If you download 3ds though, I'd go for 14, I made the mistake of taking '15 and the extensions haven't been finished for 15 yet.

Thanks Mike, done with eye Candy, they have a short trial.

What are some of the programs you guys use? Right now I'm using Gimp2, Blender, 3ds Max, and Chasys with no extensions yet.

In order of use:
Paint.NET+lots of plug-ins, CorelDraw, PS CS6. I have Blender and Inkscape and still trying to figger them out.
