Customizing the search ability

Hello All;
Who's aware of how to access the means by which a START---> Search [ keywords for the search] is performed. I'm looking to customize the directories, files, types and what content is to be searched and thus need to have the "handle" of both the Input "door", the functionality and the output "door" of this Windows 7 ability.
