cut and paste not working

i have win 7 ultimate x64 on a toshiba satellite pro a200, i cannot left click left hold and drag over text
i can get the cursor where i want it, but text does not highlight, i put in a usb mouse and it worked
but that defeats the object, its synoptic, all driver are up to date as well, as i did a fresh install of win 7
i also cannot move any icon on desktop, can cut and paste things txt docs apps to different locations though, is it a hardware problem

Does the laptop have a touchpad settings dialog? You checked to see if you can turn tap and drag or similar on and off? I see where a sticky ESC key will also disable drag and drop. This may also sound stupid, but touchpad problems can often be fixed by removing the battery and AC power, hold down the power button for 15 seconds or so, leave the laptop unpowered for 1/2 hour, then reconnect everything. Worth a try
