D-Link DWL G710 worked until installed Windows 7

The D-Link DWL G710 range extender worked until my son installed Windows 7 on his laptop, but now he's lost connectivity. This model is just discontinued by D-Link and I'd have to pay for tech help (they don't even say how much for half hour before you have to give them your card # !!) so they're no help.

Windows XP would scan and give you a list of the signals in your area, but there's no such feature that we can find on Windows 7. So one doesn't know where the problem lies, with the signal or with the OS, or what. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Maybe Windows 7 doesn't support this model? We downloaded the driver--actually it downloaded automatically, we think, because other things work with the new OS, but we downloaded it again anyway just to be sure. But still nothing.

If it wasnt a win 7 driver it needs to be installed in compatibility mode. to do that right click the installer>properties>compatibility> check OS

As Zigzag says you may have a driver compatibility problem so try that mode since the device has been discontinued.

As to your quote above, you should see in the Taskbar notification area (right side near the date and time) a network icon that you can click to bring up a Connect to Network message and you can click OK to setup a network. Otherwise you can click the Start button and in Search type the word net. On the menu find and click Network and Sharing Center. If Win 7 has found a network it will show in there.

The DWL-G710 is merely used with a wireless router to extend the wireless network...basically an additional WAP. Installing Windows 7 has no effect on it at all.

If you cannot connect your son's laptop to the wireless network now, I would check to see what wireless card he has and ensure that there are proper drivers installed for that. The best option is to check the manufacturers website. If you connect the laptop via network cable instead, you should be able to check for drivers from Microsoft automatically.

I appreciate the reply! I still must think the problem has something to do with the Windows 7 installation, since the problem began immediately upon the installation. Also, as I said, we already downloaded the drivers. Plus, regarding the wireless card, he gets connectivity if he moves the laptop closer to the wireless modem next to my desktop, within range of it. So the problem must lie with the extender.

My son still hasn't tried the fix mentioned in the first reply, but as soon as he does, I'll report. Thanks to all, meanwhile!
