I desperately need to retrieve backup files from an external HD, but i'm getting the following error..

Location is not available
G:\ is not accessible. Data error (cycle redundancy check)

I've tried Recuvu with limited success.

As far as the system is concerned, there is nothing on G - it is 100% free. But you can try chkdsk /r. Maybe it can fix it. Some people also were successful with this program : Rescue Kit Free Edition | PARAGON Software Group - free partition software, hard disk partitioning

Next time make frequent backups of your stuff.

I do make frequent backups...and this is where they go.

I tried a few things, but on the end I've just wiped and formated it. Think I'll be looking for a new one tomorrow.

So that was your backup disk. Well, if your originals are still in good order, that is easy to reestablish.
