+1 on separating User Data & OS.

But in general you have to use the File > Save > Choose Drive and Folder method if you want to save your personal data files to specific folders. Sending everything to the User or My Documents folder, reset to default to the 2nd drive as suggested by Gregrocker, is good if that folder works for you.

Some of the better written applications will have a setting in their Options or Preferences that allow you to choose the default folder any saved file will go to. My MS Office documents default to F:\Business. Nero WaveEditor files default to I:\MP3\New.

Unfortunately too many applications do not have that option. In those cases you can use either the generic OS user folder, or just File > Save > Choose.

Best to keep Program Data with Program Files on the OS drive.

I only separate active User sub-folders to the data partition.

+1

it's safe and easy to just move pictures, music, videos and documents folders - maybe faves and downloads too, if you like.

Agreed.

The only applications I would even consider putting on a secondary drive (away from the OS) are the ones which require no installation.
Things like Prime95 for example, which just runs from a folder.

If it needs to be installed, best left with the OS.

hmm, i posted a link to very similar solution on this thread and it has been removed. Looking through the forum rules I cannot see that I violated any. I was not advertising any competing web site--merely I googled the problem and that link came up as a solution--and seemed a viable solution to me--therefore I posted the link prefaced by: "perhaps this will help" or something to that effect.I did not palgarize as I cited the link.

oh my this is the first crticism of this fine site I have, but I do believe there is a strong dislike of a competing website's solution linked...hey, I can see that..

..but it was just offered up as a possible solution and there was no other ill intent.
