Data Recovery From IDE Disk with a IDE to USB Converter

Hello I'm trying to recover data from 2 old IDE Drives. I have an IDE to USB Converter connected to the drive and power cable directly from the PSU. Windows recognizes the drive but it says Disk Unknown and when I try to start it, it reads The Device is Not ready. I also tried MiniTool Partition Wizard and the drive seems to be set on Read-Only there. I'm in need of you expertise. Thanks.

Hello and welcome kheldar have a look at this
BOOTABLE UBUNTU
Make a bootable Ubuntu disk Get Ubuntu | Download | Ubuntu
Set the BIOS to boot from the optical when the machine boots it will show you a screen with TRY or INSTALL > select TRY not INSTALL
When it is finished - it takes very little time you will get a screen like in the pic .
Open the drive you want > User and dig down until you get to the data / settings you may be able to copy / paste the material you want to an external source or other installed drive doing this.
I am not sure if it will but I have recovered tons of data etc using this method both on "dead" or just plain drives that you cannot get data from using Windows.

Thank your for your reply. I'll try it but I realized that the converter doesn't recognizes the drives. Even without the disk connected to the converter windows sees it as Disk 4, then I bought another converter , IDE to SATA this time and It doesn't recognize the drives either. So I'm thinking there might be a problem with the disks. do you think your solution might be of help?

Yeah I have one of those adaptors and one like this.I'll give it a try downloading it

Yes worth a try mate as Windows is not involved in the process it cannot interfere with the drive being seen and looked into.

Good point mate though I must say I haven't used IDE's for some time now and if I remember correctly the brands have their own jumper settings - I stand to be corrected of course.

Now while I am thinking of it in your specs you are using W10?? it might have some bearing on whether that system is compatible with IDE drives because I would hazard a guess that the drives are only 3Gbs or less transfer rate.

Now it might be worth trying on the 10 forum for an answer - same people different system or use that Ubuntu method which I think is the easiest.
