My power supply on my old comp died, so it was time to upgrade computers, I went from running windows XP to windows 7 now. I saved my old "previously upgraded" 320g wd internal drive to recover the data to my new machine. I got an external drive enclosure, installed everything but windows is telling me I dont have "access" to the drive. Any help? When I go into disk management, it sees the drive but it's not initialized, nor will it let me initialize it when I try.

Thanks

Is that external connected via a controller card? Is the driver for that controller installed?

Do you have the hard drive jumper set at master?

Have you tried setting the drive up in Windows?

Go to Control Panel;

Computer Management;

and see what that tells you.

If it is set as a boot partition you may need to change the jumpers.

it is set as master, and in disk management, it says it's Disc 6. unknown, not initialized, then 298 GB unallocated, and when I click initialize, it does nothing

yes, the old drive is an IDE drive, and the new mobo only supports SATA, but I have a Raid controller that allows connection to an IDE drive, so I tried to run the connection through there, but I couldnt get the double boot up conflict to stop no matter what pin conifuration, or anything I did in BIOS, So i decided to do the toaster option.

Just curiosity, but you said that this drive is labeled drive 6 in Disk Management, but in your specs you only list 2 drives, one of which appears to be this one...what are the other 5 drives?

disk 0 is my internal drive, 1-4 are labeled removable, and disc 5 is another external hard drive that has been and is running fine.

At this point, I just looking for clues, rather than providing answers, but have you checked in the BIOS to see if the drive is properly detected there?

EDIT: Are both disk 5 and 6 connected in exactly the same fashion?

Well, the only thing I can think of is something like this;

$4.20 - SATA to IDE Converter Driver - Cables & Adapters

Pros:
I've used this product to salvage several IDE drives from an older computer. Works like a charm with Western Digital drives.

Cons:
I recently used this to add a Pioneer DVR 112D. I can only use the Cable Select jumper setting and it automatically sets the DMA Transfer rate to Ultra DMA Mode 2 instead of Mode 4. Therefore I can't write DVDs with the software I'm using. Luckily I have another DVD writer installed.

Other Thoughts:
Good for hard drives but you may have reduced performance with some DVD writers.

Bottomline:
Excellent product for the money. I'll use it in the future for another IDE hard drive that I'm looking to salvage in my new PC.

I'll give that a try, I was looking for an IDE/SATA conversion cable before the enclosure, but guess I didnt look hard enough. I currently have a help ticket in with ACOMDATA to see if there's an updated driver for windows 7, seems they dont have support for that yet,
will post the results

Tom

What boot conflict did you have when you correctly attempted to attach the IDE drive internally?

Set the Win7 SATA drive as first HD to boot in BIOS setup and there should be no conflict. Your IDE drive will not boot or attempt to boot unless you choose it in BIOS Boot Order or BIOS Boot menu.

If you don't have access to the external drive then don't panic. It might be happening due to incompatibility of any application after windows update. Some applications become incompatible to the updated version of Windows after updating the older version. Hence, it is important to fix this problem by formatting. After that you can opt for a data recovery software free download to recover the lost files.
