I have several g-accounts. They are the only free site, that I am aware of, that provide 15 GB free data storage. I only use it for this (non-confidential data, e.g mp3, jpg, etc.). Much cheaper than a portable flash drive, yes? Thoughts/opinions/sage advice welcome.

How long have you been using it? How do you like it? I just got a Laptop so with WiFi being available I'm considering storing some stuff online myself. :)

Edit: the other thing I wonder is can you have subfolders in the Drive folder? Or is it all just a mishmash of files? And is it totally free?

Is it way simple? I just learned the hard way I need to keep some stuff online rather than trying to copy stuff to a USB under pressure. :)

It's very easy. just download the App and install it. Start Googledrivesync and it will take you through the setup. It creates a folder in your user profile and will sync everything in that.

Whoah, you guys are on top of this. I discovered this by accident when I tried to attach a file over the 25 MB limit and it asked me if I wanted to store it on the cloud. Since then I have been emailing myself and attaching files. So, this app thing is an easier way?

Free online storage of any kind tends to be ephemeral and is risky at best. Many people have lost files because free online storage sites went belly up with little or no warning. Using multiple sites storing duplicate data will help to mitigate the risk.

Besides Google being snoopy (encrypting your data will eliminate that danger), it is notorious for discontinuing services. Considering that Google is probably not making much, if any, money giving away free storage, I would not trust Google to store my data.

I keep all my data on my desktop computer but I also keep backups on two local HDDs, a HDD kept in a safe deposit box at my credit union, and backed up online using Carbonite (a paid backup service, much safer than free storage options).

I could buy a new, super computer with the money I have in external, 1Tb hard HDs. I've had little luck storing on CD/DVD. They seem to flake out for no apparent reason. To each his own.
