Another way to Sync, Backup and Store your Files to the Cloud with Skydrive - Windows 7 Forums. This has worked for me without a hitch for over a year now.

I just can't stomach any installed Google program or staying signed into their sites, which immediately overrides Opt Out of Network Advertising and pastes ads based on whatever I searched that day. MS and Firefox seem to avoid this.

Which is one reason why Carbonite (a paid cloud backup, not storage, service) is one of my four backups.

CrashPlan is one of those solutions. It has a free service that allows you to backup your data on a friend's computer (and vice versa). CrashPlan also has its own servers you can backup your data to but they have had a poor track for that in the past. Also, if your computer doesn't access or update your data at least once a month, CrashPlan will delete it, even if your account is paid up.

True that! Multiple backups are vital to reasonably ensure your data is protected.

There seems to some confusion with terms. Storage is not the same as backup. Storage just refers to where you park your data. Backup refers to a duplicate of data kept in a safe place so it can be recovered should the original data be lost or corrupted.

Synchronised cloud storage is not really a safe backup solution. Consider the case where you accidentally delete the data on your PC. How long will it be before that is deleted in the cloud?

As it says in Sync, Backup and Store your Files to the Cloud with Skydrive - Windows 7 Forums any accidentally deleted data is in your recycle bin on each device where it has sync'd. So it is never lost entirely unless you empty the Recycle Bin on each device before you notice it was deleted. For this reason I peruse Recycle Bin before emptying.

I also use SyncToys to back up my User folders every three days. This is set to Contribute so that it doesn't delete anything, making the backup an archive as well. In each Backup folder I have access to everything I've ever had in each User folder.

Depends on the backup scheme used. In the case of Carbonite, backed up data is versioned for 30 days. For example, I backup a file to Carbonite. Carbonite will hold that file as long as it remains on my computer. It will not delete it until 30 days after I delete the original on my computer. If I change a file, Carbonite will also keep the unchanged version of the file for 30 days after the change is made before deleting it.

True and even Google Drive and SkyDrive have recycle bins now.

Is it configurable to manual FTP upload sync? I notice Explorer folder copy slows to just about dead on my Laptop. I wonder if folder change detection is killing it? FreeCommander has built in FTP client with a nice folder sync feature. I have to take this google off and see if then I can copy a few hundred files to and from same partition. The file copy indicator all but hung.

All you can do is stop the sync process and manually upload. You have to do that from the web and there is no conditional uploading if you do that.

I won't know what bogged Explorer until I test. But for me I'd rather just have plain vanilla FTP space. If it's not the culprit I'll post.

Edit: in my case I'm on a Laptop running W8 home. I uninstalled GD and Explorer drag and drop copy seems back to normal. Go figure.
