So anytime I set my date and time to the correct settings either manually, in the bois, or allowing to sync with internet time option, the date and time seem to adjust forward randomly but seems to be often 2-3 weeks. Not sure when it changes since I never catch real time but I've changed my time approximately 10 times now and it never sticks. What's up???

Hello Piotrowr,

It sounds like you may need to replace a dead or weak battery on your motherboard.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

The PC was put together about 3 months ago so it would be strange to already need a new battery.

My PC is not hooked up to the phone. Our phone is hooked up to the cable modem.

I believe the Captain was referring to a cellphone, rather than a landline.

Is your system time incorrect right now? If so, could you tell us what the time says, as opposed to the actual local time for you?

Yes, I just reset to local time at 11:17 and now I'm looking at it and it's 2:24pm, moved two hours ahead already. Time zone and all looks good.

No I do not have a cell phone hooked up to the pc.

All the motherboards I've seen use the same battery. It's a lithium coin-cell, type CR2032.

If you open up the time menu that lets you change the time, select the other tab, which says "additional clocks." Do you have any set?

Also, I would try setting your time zone to something else, select "apply" close the window, then reopen it and set it to the proper time zone again.

No other clocks active and I did as you recommended with the time zone.

Yeah, I would start with replacing the battery to see if that may help since you can get a new one for just a few dollars. The number is written on the back of the battery for which one to get, but it should be the normal type CR2032 as Dwarf posted above.

A new battery will probably solve your problem. If not I would recommend running security scans. I have read some place (Goggle, virus changing clock). They do this to try and stop you from updating your security programs.

Good point since when the clock changes my McAfee starts to require a renewal and have me jump through some hoops to do it but I noticed if I just reset the clock to current, the renewal notice goes away. What would you recommend as a good security sweep in terms of something like this?

First I would use your anti virus and then two programs I and many others recommend are Super Anti Spyware and Malwarebytes Anti Malware. I don't have any trust in McAffe. I use Webroot with Spy Sweeper but many use MSE from Microsoft and are pleased. MSE is free.
If you can't get on line in your normal fashion for updates try this. Start and type in the search,
hh Microsoft Corporation: Software, Smartphones, Online, Games, Cloud Computing, IT Business Technology, Downloads from there you should be able to go to needed sites.
