It all started when I changed the render distance values of DayZ in "DayZ other profiles" in my documents. I modifyied them to their defaults (I thought I did). Then I went to steam to start the game but all I got is a black screen after 30 or more seconds. Then I was sitting in the black screen for a minute or two and a REALLY slow and laggy bohemia logo came. Another 30 seconds on that logo and another black screen. 2 mins and the DayZ logo and after that another black screen and nothing came in 5 minutes.

I have tried:

Redownloading DayZ
Removing CFG's folders from my documents (DayZ and DayZ other profiles)
Adding -nopause -nologo(or similar) to steam launch parameters. - This one made a change which is that when I finally got the black screen "started" I had to wait 30 seconds for only the DayZ logo which had a text in the upper left corner "Waiting for host" or something like that.

And thats it.

About the computer start up slowness..... Usually when I start my computer from a shutdown it takes 20-30 secs to get past the windows animated logo screen. Today it took 3-5 minutes. Under a minute on the "Starting windows" text and the rest on the "Protected by avast!" text.

I feel as these 2 are connected as the slowness started right after the DayZ thing.

Modifying game file values will not have an effect on anything outside of the game. This is just a coincidence.

First id suggest a system restore, to a day before all this happened, as something else youve installed may have had an issue on it.

Next if that doesnt work, click start, type run and then type msconfig, click the startup tab and untick everything thats non essential.. personally i untick everything bar keyboard and mouse drivers (you may want to keep anti virus software, but again i dont run any).

If all that still doesnt work then id point towards something in the hardware department. Do the usual ram tests (take out a stick one at a time and test ect) and then test your hard drives, and see if they report any bad sectors or anything.

Lastly, id suggest getting an SSD regardless!! youve got a good setup there which is hampered by slow old mechanical drives. If i had to wait 20-30 seconds for it to boot id be pulling my hair out! 8-10 is my limits :p

And remember Day-z is an Alpha game, its not going to run great on any pc, no matter its spec, so stick with it as it is, and dont try and make it better, its so poorly optimised it will just eat everything you throw at it.

System restore fixed slow boot to normal, but DayZ still doesnt work.

Ok when I used launch parameters along with -windows I finally got the game to function. I got to go to the menu where I changed my video settings to the usual I have. Then I went ingame. Took a long ass time to load but I got in. I looked around and saw that the models were very low res (polygon wise), trees in the distance were 2d and popping in and out whenever I moved a bit back and then forwards again. The building I was in was also invisible along with the other buildings which were extremely low res. (Like I was looking at them from a distance). Then I deleted the window parameter and got into the menu again. Resolution very low. I went to the settings to change em but my native res was nowhere to be found (1650x1050). I tried changing it to 1600x1200 but no effect whatsoever.

But the game still takes a bit to load.

The game is fairly slow loading as it is, even on an SSD its sometimes takes 10-20 seconds.
In steam right click on Day-z and click clear cache and then see if that makes any difference. (it will delete all user settings and the game will run as default when you restart).

This could all be down to a recent Day-z update, and its just not compatible with your current hardware configuration. Again as its an early Access game, these things are to be expected.

Maybe it has something to do with my hard drive? On defraggler other drives got 2-3 megs of random read speed but the game drive only 255kbs?

And it still takes abot a minute or two and even cs 1.6 takes wayy to long to load

OKAY ISSUE SOLVED, MY GAMES HARDDRIVE IS DYING

2-3MB/s read/write!?! you should be getting around 100MB/s Minimum on a mechanical drive, and around 200MB/s maximum the random ones may peak a little higher.

Get a solid state and youll get 500-600Mb/s read/write.

Well thats the test with defraggler, with dxtory i get about 70.
And defraggler does random write speed

I don't have enough money for a ssd with decent amount of space

you dont need a huge amount of space to gain lots. you can get a 120gb for £60/$60 which is more than enough for windows, and a few games of your choice. once its full just back up games you dont play and uninstall them. which is only a little bit more than youd pay for your average mechanical drive of a sizable volume.
And use your other drives for the mass storage.
