running windows 7 pro here. I have JRiver media center 19 installed. This has worked fine until I moved 150gb of audio and video media to an ext. HD in order to free up space on the internal HD. The best situation would be that JRiver would recognize that the files are now on the H: drive but it doesn't. I can open the H: drive and access the music with no trouble. When I go to play the files the only option I am given is to "play with VLC" player. What is this VLC player and can I uninstall it as I don't wish to use it. I've gone to control panel then defaults. For some reason I am unable to "uncheck" the file types for VLC as the default player. My goal is to make JRiver the default player for all CD's DVD's both from the HD and the D: drive.

thanks

Many programs have to be 'told' where the files are located. I find a quick way is to right-click such a file, choose Open With then at the bottom of the resultant list look for the program to use. Even though the program is listed in the upper part don't choose it. After finding the program click once on it, put a check mark on the box about always using that program. After that simply double-clicking a file should open in the desired program.

VLC is a free and very good media player and Yes, you can uninstall it in Control Panel, Programs and Features if there's no uninstall icon in the Start Menu Folder for VideoLAN.

I use JRiver Media Center too. The solution to your problem is easy. You can reimport your media files (that does not actually move any files, it just reads them adds the location and meta data to the JRiver library). Go to Tools>Options>Library&Folders then open "configure auto import" and use the Add button to add the drive/folders where your media is located. When you click Finish JRiver will add all of the media data to its library.
You can delete VLC from your computer. JRiver uses LAV and madVR (High quality) or LAV and EVR (weaker computers) for playback. It automatically downloads and sets up the programs the first time you play any media.

BTW - JRiver has a great forum. You should ask your questions there for a faster response. INTERACT FORUM - Index

I was initially hesitant to reimport the files thinking that they would all return to my C: drive from which I had just cleared them. JRiver when I open it still contains all the metadata and album art. That won't be affected when reimport the music? unfortunately for me I made the mistake of insulting the administrators of the JRiver forum when I first purchased it so I try to stay away from there.

thanks

When you import you are not moving the files (the name is misleading) you are just telling JRiver where they are located.

Don't worry about the Admins at JRiver. They get abrupt from time to time (plus 90% of the help comes from other Users like me). It is still the best place to ask questions - so if you didn't get banned for bad language or such, keep asking your question over there (you paid for the program and it comes with support).
