Hi

I have set kmplayer as the default player for FLV files but for some reason Windows Media Player is used. I have right clicked on the FLV file and chose "Set default program" and selected KMPLAYER and made sure that the "Always use selected program.." was checked.

When I double click on the FLV file, it opens with Windows Media Player even though KMPLAYER is set as the default program.

Any suggestions?

My Computer

OS
Windows 7 Ultimate
Go to Control Panel->Default Programs->Associate a file type...There, see if you can locate .flv, then you can dissociate from WMP and associate with KM player.

Too many to describe...
OS
Windows 7 x64 pro/ Windows 7 x86 Pro/ XP SP3 x86
according to Default Programs->Associate a file type... the .flv file IS associated with KM Player. I even tried to reset it with KM Player and still uses Window Media Player.

That is a PITA, I know
At one occasion I had luck to unbind wmp through the registry
I personally watch FLVs with WMP on purpose (using an external player disturbs the screen too much for me in media center)
First of all, like always when messing around in the registry, create a system restore point.
There might be up to 3 different positions to check and possibly to edit:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.flv\OpenWithList
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.flv\OpenWithList
Also might there be an OpenWithList as a subkey of
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.flv

I wonder if you have set WMP to automatically take over associations while it's used for any other file type.

I check those 3 registry keys and they are set to use KM Player.
I use KM Player for most video types except for playing DVD movies.

Are you using the Shark007 codecs?
If so, go to the Help TAB, use the Filetype Associations button, and click 'No', twice,
to remove ALL associations the button created including FLV.

ps:
clicking no once reverts the associations to what they were previous to using the button.
using "No" twice, consecutively, removes all 'codecpack' related associations.

Worked! Thanks.

I have NO external codec packs installed. No need.

I use 64-bit PotPlayer (English) as my 3rd-party universal media player for all video types. Doesn't need any extra codecs to play FLV. PotPlayer can also play all audio file formats (again, without extra codec packs installed) but I prefer to continue using Winamp for audio as I have for many years. Again, Winamp DOES NOT NEED EXTERNAL CODEC PACKS INSTALLED in order to play all audio music formats.

Like other media players, it has its own "file associations" settings (with FLV being one of the many it supports) and I've not had any issue launching PotPlayer automatically (as the "default player") from Windows Explorer.

Although it can support even more additional video formats, here's what I have set in my system to use PotPlayer by default. Again... NO EXTERNAL CODEC PACKS (which frequently "break" standard Windows Media Foundation built-in associations and cause "mysterious" Win7 media-playing malfunctions).
