Solved Defrag Blocked

I ran Samsung's Magician when I installed my Samsung 840 Pro for my boot drive. Apparently, when it blocked defragging on the SSD, it also blocked defragging the spinners, including manually. Clicking on Defragment Now just results in the computer just setting there laughing at me.

Is there any way to re-enable automatic defragging on the spinners? I've been using Defraggler to manually defrag my spinners but it's a royal PITA.

Hi Lady Fitzgerald. Go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Component Services, Console Root, Event Viewer then click on Services Local. maximise the page & look for Disk Defragmenter. They are in alphabetical order so not hard to find. Right Click on Disk Defragmenter & select Properties. That should open in the General Tab where you will see Start Up type. It will probably show disabled. If you click on this it will drop down a selection for you to select.

Ok I found it and it is disabled (big surprise, said Jeannie facetiously). My concern now is, since it is the only entry, will enabling it to automatically defrag also automatically defrag my SSD (which would not be a good thing since I would like it to last a while)?

Click Start button, Select All Programs, then Accessories, scroll down to System Tools click it & you should see Disk Defragmenter , click on that & you should be able to set the Scheduled Defrag to off & then you can manually defrag the selected discs occasionally.

It will show your Samsung SSD as well so just don't defrag it.

I also have a Samsung SSD so my defrag is disabled.

You may have to reboot your PC if the above does not show Disk Defragmenter, as enabling it may not show up, without the reboot.

You just have to go in and immediately disable automatic defragging in Windows Defragger. And not defrag the SDD. There may be a setting to "never defrag this drive" in WinDEf, but I can't remember.

There is no such option on my Samsung Magician Program. I am using a Samsung 840 Pro 256gb SSD.

As far as I know if you have multiple drives installed then Windows Disc Defragmenter will show them all including SSDs. I am not sure if you can prevent defragging being done on one particular drive if you select automatic & set a defrag frequency.

When Windows is clean installed, it disables defrag on SSDs, but schedules defrag on spinners. I disable defrag and do it manually. Click Start, type Defrag and select disk defragmenter. If it is off, it will say turn on schedule. If it is on it will say configure schedule schedule. If you click on configure schedule, there will be a check box to schedule defragmentation. At the bottom, there will be a bar to click that says select disks. You will notice your C drive is not listed. Just be sure to uncheck defrag all new disks. You can leave it that way as your SSD is not listed in the defrag schedule. Being the control freak I am, I turn the defrag off by unchecking the box, 'run on a schedule' and do it manually.

It's also found in "Services" which has a few options. A fresh install will disable defragging for an SSD but keep it enabled for HDD's. Some third party defraggers will disable the OS defragging as well.....I think.

Ok, methinks I have a handle on it now. This installation had Win 7 clean install. I used Ranger14's advice to enable Defrag, then Steve's to determine how I can schedule what drives to defrag and when (only my spinners showed up, btw ).

For now, I have turned Defrag back off until I have a more convenient time to let it defrag automatically. I was manually defragging weekly using Defraggler and it would take up to 24 hours to get the job done. I've gotten behind so I want to wait until the next time I take a short trip so I can start it and leave it running while gone. I'm afraid to use the computer while defrag is running because I scrambled up my disk recently doing that and don't want to have to deal with it again (thank God for backups!)

I pulled the trigger on a 500GB Samsung 840 EVO (caught it on sale) for my notebook so it will be interesting to see what happens there since I don't plan on doing a clean install.

I used to use Defraggler with XP, but it seems to foul up w7, it needs files where it expects them to be. Puran Free works well and it can do a boot-time defrag.

I just had a thought strike me. Actually, it was more like it whomped me upside the head. Now that I'm back off the floor and my eyes are no longer crossed... I have no idea why I was worried about automatic defragging on my notebook after I install the SSD. There will be only one drive—the SSD—so there aren't going to be any spinners in the machine. It won't matter if I don't do a clean install. All I have to do is disable defrag. Duh!

I'm surprised one of you all didn't pickup on that blooper.

SSDs will show up in the Defrag initial screen. When you click on the schedule to select the disks to defrag is when the SSDs is/are hidden. It's a little confusing since the first screen says "only disks that can be defragmented are shown". This is the truth though since you can force a defrag on a SSD from that screen. This is my schedule. The C drive is a SSD.
