So when I try to use defrag I get this message.

When I open Task manager I get this message.

It started a couple of weeks ago when my Action Center tells me my updates are not working. Something will not allow me to turn automatic update back on nor will it allow me to download them directly. I had a few errors in my cbs.log that I can show if needed.

1) Run a scan with malwarebytes antimalware (you can download the free version). Let it clean whatever it wants to.

2) After that, run CMD as admin and type the following command, then hit Enter:

sfc /scannow

Also, doublecheck that your Task Scheduler service is running. (Click on Start button, then type "Services.msc" without quotes).

Ran all scans with nothing found.

When trying to start Task Scheduler from my services window I get this message.

Here is the result from my sfc scan.

And here are the errors from the scan that were not able to be repaired (highlighted).

Couple of things you can try:

1) Make sure the Windows Event Log service is started.

2) Schedule defrag to run after ten minutes or so. See if that kickstarts Task scheduler or if Defrag starts at the scheduled time.

3) Do you have access to another Win7 machine on which task scheduler is running fine? Copy the following registry on that machine, and then import the key on the local machine.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\Schedule

I do not have another computer with windows 7, only vista.

After more research I came across the same problem (I think) with some Vista users. The fix they were using is deleting all the internet keys and sub-keys from HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\RPC\INTERNET. However in windows 7 regedit we only have the HKEY options. Thank you for the help so far.
