Defragmentation Aftermath

First things first, I apologise if this is in the wrong category, but it seemed fit.

After defragging my Windows 7 system, nothing is working. Okay, over-exaggeration. Booting into safe mode works fine; no issues or errors. However, when booting into it normally, nothing responds. My background, desktop icons and taskbar all load, but are totally unresponsive. I can't even Ctrl+Alt+Del into task manager to see if anything is hogging my CPU. I have ran chkdsk and it came back with no errors. My HDD has no bad sectors. I have made a selective boot up in msconfig, still no luck. My drivers are all up to date and working. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I defragged with Auslogics Defrag tool. Also, I have no restore points post-defrag.

I run Windows 7 Ultimate x86 on a not too old machine; dual-core 2GHz, 3GB RAM etc.

B3rtBot,
True this is not the place. This is for crashes and bsods.

That said, please run the Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper over your computer. Be sure to perform the full scan of your complete computer.

this will take several hours. The time will be well spent. When finished, be sure to attach the logs generated to your next post.

PUT SYSTEM SWEEPER ON A USB STICK
System Sweeper, https://connect.microsoft.com/systemsweeper, allows you to start an infected PC and perform an offline scan to identify and remove viruses, rootkits and other advanced malware. System Sweeper is a free standalone, bootable malware and virus remover from Microsoft.

Safety Scanner, Microsoft Safety Scanner - Antivirus | Remove Spyware, Malware, Viruses Free, is free, downloadable, provides on-demand scanning and helps remove viruses, spyware, and other malicious software. It works with your existing antivirus software.

If the target computer has a working internet connection, then you may prefer to use the Safety Scanner.

NOTE: A fine tutorial on the System Sweeper is:
How to use the Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper

Download System Sweeper (about 576 kB):
https://connect.microsoft.com/systemsweeper

Insert 256 MB or larger USB stick into a usb port.
Run the downloaded program--mssstool64.exe or mssstool32.exe
Choose the option to install to USB.
Caution: The install program will format the usb stick.

The install program will download about 200 mB more.
After the install is finished, leave the stick in the usb slot.

Run the program you downloaded once again.
This 2nd run, and any subsequent runs, will download the very latest anti-virus definitions (about 60 mB).

To keep System Sweeper up-to-date, simply reinsert the usb stick and run the installation program, mssstool64.exe or mssstool32.exe, again.

The initial, full scan by System Sweeper can easily take several hours, but subsequent quick scans will be shorter.
Remember, your computer is being very thoroughly checked for all types of malware.

The results of System Sweeper will be in:
\Windows\Standalone System Sweeper\Support as one or more files with a LOG extension which can be viewed with Notepad.

Something tells me that another FREE program messed up your operating system.

Is there some reason that you did not use the windows 7 included defrag?

Also, did you use the latest updated version of "Auslogics Defrag" and did you check on google to see if anyone else had problems?

Another really good reason to always create an image backup before using non Operating system utilities.

I have dos 6.22, wfwg 3.11, win98, 2000 and xp VHD's available for testing. MS's Virtual PC works great.
Actually, Auslogics defragger is safe, at least it was, when I test it. I only recommend contig as a defragger but wanted to know whether to tell me that Auslogics was a go or a nogo. It's a go.

I have never tried this but it can't hurt. From safe mode run sfc /scannow from the cmd prompt/admin and see if that helps. I also just use the built in Windows 7 defrag.
