Delay between command and response

Suddenly this computer has developed a delay between command and response. This applies to:
- typing (delay before letters show)
- clicking(delay before click activates)
- any ordinary operations ... opening pages, playing videos, closing browser etc.
This is a recent development and there is no obvious source (ie haven't visited insecure sites)

I have scanned and report is virus free.

Unsure what other steps I can take aside from a total file scan.

Any suggestions?

Run msconfig. Go to the Services tab. Disable all non-Microsoft services. Reboot the computer. See if the problem has disappeared.

If this fixed the problem, then one of the non-Microsoft services is the culprit. Reenable one at a time in msconfig, rebooting after each reenable. When the problem comes back, you know which service was the culprit.

Reenable the remaining services, one at a time, rebooting after each reenable, to make sure that there isn't another culprit.

Have seen this problem and it was Windows Update. Try to set WU to manual on Services. Open Windows Update and set it to never check for updates.

Thanks mrjimphelps - have done that and found only two non MS items and un-ticked them.

Megahertz07 - what you say feels right ... it all began after an update. Since the laptop crashed completely and I had to restart with rescue disk and then reloaded a system's image. So have lost the latest data.
Would you by any chance have any idea about which DL item it was? Be good to delete it.

What you mean by DL?
Did you turned off WU as I suggested?

DL = Down Load ... probably WD (Win update) should have been used.
Yes, WU now turned off.

I deleted the 3 last WU and so far the system is working properly...early days but looks good.

You know Megahertz07 this is not the first time I've had serious trouble from WU. I used to have MSE (as the anti virus) and
encountered blue screen and total failure due to conflicts between MSW and the WU. Needless to say I never used MSW again.

What gets me is that there is no consumer protection. For example after years of trying to find a solution I still have to put up
with jumping cursor which makes touch typing impossible. MS couldn't care less. To have WU which cause a system to totally lock up (I couldn't restart and had to reboot from REscue disk and re-load recent Image) is just not acceptable.

On my computer Win update is set to manual (on Services) and Never check on WU.
Now I only manually install security only updates.

Brink posts links to the Monthly Rollup Updates (in the News section).

Make sure you select the Security Only Updates.

IIRC, the IE Updates are NOT included.

Opening this thread again. After operating well for a day the system has reverted to the original problem, viz delay between command and response and general lack of response.
I have tried to follow the instructions above but first download (KB3020369): see attached capture

2nd download (KB3125574) received this message: see 2nd attached capture.

This is becoming too complicated for a non technical person like me. However, I thank you for your help and wish I could have understood it all. Looks like I must purchase another computer as I have much work to do.

Under services (%windir%\system32\services.msc) Windows update must be set to Manual (not disabled), otherwise you won't be able to manually install updates (*.msu files).
