anyone do this? will it effect an upgrade to 7?

I was thinking of just burning the file to a blank dvd and storing it with my vista recovery discs. It would free up 3.5 gb

swsetup stores software, updates, drivers that were provided by the vendor usually available from their website. I think it will be safe to delete but maybe backup is still a good idea.

All of my systems still run fastest on XP 32-bit for the most part. Win7 is fun to play with, but I still prefer XP for raw speed, security, and functionality.
thats what I have been reading after searching google. I am really curious if it will effect the upgrade to 7. I may just wait till after, couldn't hurt. But, that extra space is calling my name.

I have no doubt, you will be able to upgrade without the swsetup folder. Windows doesn't rely on it.

The SWSetup files are unzipped software files (chipset, ethernet/NIC, video, sound) normally downloaded from the product support download page for your computer's manufacturer. You can locate those drivers there.

Windows 7 will provide almost all of your latest drivers on the installation medium and in successive optional Windows Updates.

So if you are doing a clean install, it won't be necessary to hunt down the drivers on the computer's download web page, Nvidia/Intel website, etc. However you may need to have your ethernet or wireless driver handy in case it isn't included in the Win7 installer so you can get online to Update and research missing drivers.

If you're doing an Upgrade install, all of your programs, drivers and most settings will normally be transferred to the upgraded system.
