@whs...RAID question.

Now that newegg has a crazy sale on the crucial SSDs, I figured I buy 2 and put them in RAID 0 (is it going to be a noticeable speed increase?) to complement my RAID 1 3tb HDDs. MY question is, can I have 2 different RAID arrays? I honestly can't tell between an Intel, Marvell, and/or "JMB" controller on the mobo (I think my mobo has all 3). I have 6 SATA ports total and the drives should take up 4 leaving the remaining 2 for DVD drives. I have also heard that if not set up properly, the RAID arrays will cause instabilities and crashes AND DVD drives not being able to be used on some SATA ports. SO this time, I am going to ask the experts before opening up the case and screwing around. Thanks again!

Raid0 for SSDs does only make sense when you use the SSDs to move a lot of data in large blocks around.

For the OS it is completely useless. The high performance of the OS on a SSD comes from the extremely fast access time. The OS, however, does not read or write a lot of data and that in 4K blocks. Thus the added data transfer speed of Raid does not buy you anything (or extremely little) for the OS.

And in general you are right. Raid can cause all kinds of problems, especially for the OS.

The day when we will be able to afford 500GB or 1TB SSDs and use those for showing large amounts of data around, I would revisit Raid0 - but not for the OS because of the peculiar data requirements of the OS.

ok I have tried to free up disk space on my SSD but was only able to free up a paltry 2 gb =/ am i missing something? I already adjusted restore pt config, and shouldnt have any old files to delete since it was a fresh install. I only have about 22gbs free on my 60gb SSD and from what I have been reading W7 Ultimate should only take about 25gbs right? Also, I was able to setup RAID with my 3tb HDDs with ctrl+I @ boot but not being seen in my computer folder. I just downloaded the drivers for RST and now Intel recognizes the array but still does not show. I have started "initializing" the array but only at 12% after 45min...is there any faster way?? thanks!

Have you deleted the hiberfile and reduced the pagefile - each take the amount of space equal to you RAM. The hiberfile you delete with the powercfg -h off command and the pagefile you can reduce to 2GB. Here are the instructions from the help and support page:

Go to Control Panel\System and Security\System
In the left pane, click Advanced system settings.
GetContent.aspx
If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
On the Advanced tab, under Performance, click Settings.
Click the Advanced tab, and then, under Virtual memory, click Change.
Clear the Automatically manage paging file size for all drives check box.Under Drive [Volume Label], click the drive that contains the paging file you want to change
Click Custom size, type a new size in megabytes in the Initial size (MB) or Maximum size (MB) box, click Set, and then click OK.

What exactly do you mean by "initialization process " - is that the time it takes to boot?

Your pic is invisible. You have to upload with the paperclip. What is this option all about.

We cannot see the drive listings because the window was not maximized before snipping.

You may have a BIOS update to utilize for disk space on huge HD's, or if the 2tb is spanned there are other reasons it is limited.

Do you have a windows.old folder in the root of the C drive which saved the entire previous OS you installed from - instead of correctly installing from boot? Go to Start>Computer>C: now to look. If so, save any files you need from it and delete it to recover the space.

I actually don't have that .old folder and i remember my BIOS seeing my HDDs as 2.72tb each when I set up the RAID array so I dont think it is a BIOS issue. Also I do remember setting the drives up as GPT once windows started again (I had 2 2.7tb drives then as well in disk mgmt, but not now). And now that I am thinking that my new single drive in disk mgmt is set up in MBR format based on my error message and will try to delete the volume and convert to GPT again to see if that will change anything. I will let you know once I get to doing it following these instructions =)

Ok I managed to combine the all partitions and now have a 2.72tb drive!! However, my only concern is that my drive in disk mgmt is NOT fault tolerant. I KNOW for a fact I built the RAID 1 volume in BIOS, is disk mgmt suppose to recognize what I did in BIOs or is this a whole different relation? As in OS can't see BIOS n vice versa?
