Deleted All User Accounts

Hi,

My son bought an HP with Windows 7 that had apparently been used as a display model. He had only owned it for about 2 months, when he could no longer log in -- screen would go black (with pointer arrow showing) but would otherwise never finish booting.

I was able to successfully log in to his account (set up as an administrator) in Safe Mode.

I noticed that there was another user account called MDX Kiosk that was logged on and had several programs running in background.

In order to improve his performance, I went into the Control Panel and deleted the user account "MDX Kiosk". It was slow to respond and I hit the enter key 2 or 3 times (apparently a big mistake).

When I shut down the PC and tried to re-boot, I found that I had not only deleted the MDX Kiosk account but had apparently deleted my son's user account as well. Now I can no longer log on to the computer.

I've read the threads about the "Built In Administrator" but have been unable to logon to that -- I guess it is disabled???

Any suggestions???

Hello Dnewpor, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you do not have any other administrator account that you can log in to, then you might see if you may be able to boot into Safe Mode. Afterwards, see if you can enable, log off, and log on to the built-in Administrator account.

Once you are logged into the built-in Administrator account, you can just create new ordinary administrator accounts to replace the ones that you deleted.

Booting into safe mode was no help. I can't get logged in to then be able to enable the Administrator.

I was able to bypass windows and get an MS-DOS command prompt. I then went into the windows/system32 directory and entered the following command:
net user administrator /active:yes

it said that the command was processed successfully. But when i then re-boot into Windows, it still says the administrator account is disabled.

My very first instinct here is to tell you to do a clean install after wiping the disk. If you have a lot of data, back it up if you can.

The reason I suggest this is because of what happened. Something that has been used as a display model is usually set up with strict admin permissions, and odd accounts.
This will solve that problem from ever occurring again, and remove any issues that were caused by using it as a display model.

I haven't added anything to fix the problem as Brink is usually pretty thorough

EDIT: To you latest post: It is likely that there is BIOS protection and something to keep anyone from making changes to the PC, thus the clean install being more necessary.

The store your son bought this PC from should have recovered it back to an "out of box" state. Was this PC provided with a Windows disc or a recovery partition?

Since it appears that you purchased the computer with the OS already installed, you may not be able to do a clean install. You can, however, restore to factory specs. Most computers have such an option, but all are different. I will give you the information that I have for laptops. If the necessary information is not there and you cannot find it in your computer manual, post the mfg and model of your computer so that we can help.
