Hello everyone
i bought a new laptop two days ago, a Dell Inspiron 15R
and i'm happy with its performance

main specs:
CPU Core i7 Q740 1.73GHz
Ram 4GB DDR3
GPU ATI HD Radeon Mobility 5470 1GB (Up to 2737)

but i'm worried coz i noticed that it warms once i start it up
then heats so much when running a game (Homefront)
here's the temps (by SpeedFan):

At normal situation
(when i don't open or use anything! just the firefox and SpeedFan):-

And these temps when i only run homefront game on the main menu!!!
before i even play it.

- Are these even normal??
- Does this affected something in my laptop? because if so, i'll return it and take a new one xD
- What do u suggest?

what the hell's wrong with dell!? everyone advised me to buy a dell laptop, and unfortunately i faced a problem in the second day! i hope everything's normal, i really need ur help and info, i don't care about games i just wanted to test its ability on games that's all, but i'm thinking about heat when working with other things like editing hd videos, graphic designs etc..

thanks,.

My desktop is around 40 degrees when stressed, so I was shocked originally by those temperatures. I did some digging, and laptop temperatures are typically a lot higher, around 70 degrees when stressed ;)
Considering that this is an i7 as well, I would consider this a fairly normal temperature, just make sure you aren't obstructing any ventilation grills.

I have the same problem

I have the same model 15R (N5010).

Although it has good looks its a bunch of rubbish under the hood.

The answer to your question is: NO ITS NOT NORMAL.
As the above users stated usually the reason could be from the overheating GFX which does tend to get overheated when you play 3D games. BUT, in the case of 15R, There are 2 Factual reasons for it over heating:

1. Its not the GFX directly overheating, but the low quality Samsung Hard Disk (which you can see from many forums that its one of the least trusted Hard Disk brands) which overheats and passes on the heat directly to the GFX which is situated next to the HDD.

2. Unlike other laptops Dell 15R (manufactured by Quanta) seems to have deducted some parts from the body to make it cheaper (like the HDD bay cover). Due to bad engineering the airflow is faulty and its not cooling the system as its supposed to.

Worse, due to the lack of drivers you are virtually stuck with Win7 64bit (32 bit works too). In most laptops you can control the fan speed enabling to make it work faster so that the system cools down (although noisy). But it seems its not possible to override it on 15R.

My advice:

  1. Buy a laptop cooler which is like a plate placed under the case enabling it to get further airflow.
  2. Change the HDD to a more proper brand such as Seagate or Maxtor.
  3. Keep the HDD at least 40% empty.
  4. Defrag once a week.
  5. Do not use laptop on bed, or lap (so that the airflow intakes are not blocked).
  6. If you are using it on the table and not mobile for a long time, use it without the battery (remove it).
  7. Backup data regularly, because it will keep on crashing.
BTW my default idle values are:
CPU: 68C
GFX: 76C
GFX Load: 0%
HDD: 40C

Loaded Values without cooling pad:
CPU: 82C
GFX: 89C
GFX Load: 68% (while playing wow).
HDD: 55C

Loaded Values with cooling pad:
CPU: 61C
GFX: 68C
GFX Load: 68% (while playing wow).
HDD: 46C

If you dont want to fiddle with stuff like above, do yourself a favor and next time spend a bit more and get an HP Pavillion (which I certainly will) and save yourself from the headaches.

i have the same problem. i cleaned out my heatsync, and fan. i have a extended battery which sticks out the bottom. it helps with air flow. when i am doing heavy photoshop work or rendering 3d stuff in blender it has maxed out at 83C, it seems to be have something to do with turbo boost. it once hit 85c and my turbo boost went down to 2.66GHz but still. when i use the turbo boost off mode (power plan with the maximum cpu set to 99%) it doesnt get any hotter than 65C. when i have my laptop cooling pad on it can run at 2.8GHz for hours, the temp doesnt go above 64C on max load
