Dell Inspiron 6000 Function keys

Installed Windows 7 and all going quite well. One problem which I can't resolve - the Fn/F3 (battery) and Fn/F10 (open disc drive) do not work. Fn/F2 to deactive wireless is OK.

I'm assuming it's a driver problem but I could be definitely wrong with this thinking.

Anybody got an idea?

Hmm, I have an Inspiron 6000 and I never used these keys when I had XP. However, these function keys (Fn/F3, Fn/F10) require Dell QuickSet, no matter what version of Windows you have, while other function keys (like Fn/F2) work via the bios. And yes, you can use QuickSet under Windows 7, although if you search the Internet you'll find nothing but people who say it cannot be done.

Here's how to install QuickSet in Windows 7. Go to support.dell.com, enter your service tag, and download the installation program for QuickSet. (The one I downloaded saved as R130907.EXE, version 7.1.10.) Right click on the file, select Properties, then Compatibility tab, then select "Change settings for all users" and enter your administrator password, and then select "Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows XP (Service Pack 2)", although I did it with Service Pack 3 mode. Now right click the file, run as administrator, follow through the install, and reboot when it asks.

After you do this, let me know if QuickSet displays the volume properly when you press the front volume buttons. For me, QuickSet only displays max volume, no matter what the volume actually is.

Function keys now working. The front volume buttons show the sliding scale as it is increased or decreased so I thought everthing was ok.

On rebooting the front volume buttons and the fn/volume keys display the maximum setting which I assume is the same as your FinalCyclon.

Thanks for the help.

Note that in your notification area, the speaker icon shows 0-3 lines, depending on the volume, so you can look at that instead of QuickSet's stuck volume indicator. (If it matters, I'm using the sound drivers from the Dell website, in XP compatibility mode.)

Hi Logic
No I haven't been able to resolve the volume slider issue, but being totally honest I haven't looked too deep into the problem. Everything else seems to work ok so I'm happy enough to leave it.
I use the volume speaker icon in the task bar to adjust the volume.

Just registered today in the hopes that I could help someone with this minor inconvenience. I installed Quickset and after I restarted noticed the volume bar was sticking. I went into program files/dell/quickset, right clicked on 'quickset.exe' and set the compatibility for Windows XP SP3 and haven't noticed problems since.

Really enjoying the new OS. Great forum, too!

Hi Guys

Recently started using the Beta version (Build 7100) in earnest and I find that none of the function buttons work. Tried following the procedure above and was told that the OS was incompatible during installation of quickset.

Any ideas?

Thanks

You have to install it in Windows XP compatibility mode as per my message above.
