i have a Dell Inspiron laptop but my windows 7 wont start external drive plugged in.
any help appreciated

If you're saying that your laptop will not boot up if an external HDD is plugged in. check into BIOS setup, make sure that your main HDD is first in priority boot.

i did that,my extrernal hdd has only music files .but with it plugged in windows won't boot it just hangs

Try disabling External or removable devices also.

Also, you can boot your laptop while the e.HDD was unplugged then re-plug it after boot.

Check whether there is an active partition on the external harddrive (check in disk management). If yes, deactivate that partition.
