Solved Dell latitude d630 shuts off randomly

Hello all,

I have an issue with this older laptop I would like to use more.

It appears that whenever I fresh install Windows 7 on it and leave it on overnight, it is off when I wake up in the morning. I don't know why it does this..

I don't believe it is overheating because I leave it on for several hours in the day and it stays on just fine, but when I go to bed it turns off. My power settings are for it to stay on all day as well, unless I prompt it to turn off. I do not have any viruses either as I've done a fresh install.

I have ran my diagnostic test and everything went fine and now I'm doing additional memory tests.

I'm totally lost here..

Some programs such as backup programs can be set to do a shutdown after running a backup.
Do you have any scheduled programs that might be set to do a shutdown ?

No I do not have any programs, I just fresh installed Windows 7 and haven't put on a single program yet.

Have a look at your power settings options.

Go to the screen where you see the Balanced (recommended) plan and click on the link named Change plan settings. You might want to select Never when Plugged in for all three settings.

If you are going to close the lid on the laptop, then click on the link named Change advanced power settings. Scroll down until you find Power buttons and lid. Expand that setting and set as desired.

Those are the settings that I see. Your mileage may vary.

Ok no such luck it still powered off.

I removed the battery because I thought that could've been it but no such luck. Battery or no battery it still turns off..

Not a good thing to do on a laptop but you could disable hibernation temporarily making sure you're connected via wired power

Click Start and type in the search box
cmd
Right click the suggestion and select Run as administrator
Type in command prompt
powercfg -h off
Press the Enter key
Then type
exit
Then the Enter key and the cmd window will close.

If it doesn't "shutdown" then repeat above and instead use
powercfg -h on

You need to look at the individual settings for each "operation", within Balanced,
( i use high and change options to what i want)
They all have time out limits, not sure what balance uses but i suspect that
Turn off harddrive after X(hours), is less than your break therfor it WILL shutdown.

Ok, I tested my old hard drive that was on the laptop with windows already on it and it stayed on all night.. it seems only when I do a fresh install on a new hard drive.

I just installed windows 7 on my laptop again and will check my event viewer tomorrow morning, if the same thing happens, again. Thank you all so much.

As for power options, everything was set to stay on no matter what, but I'll check again.

Ok, so I entered my event viewer and it said my laptop keeps turning off in sleep mode, which it is. What I do not understand though, is that I set my computer to never turn off hard disks as well as on my balanced power option, I set it to "never" on all categories.

What is causing this thing to go to sleep?

The event is called "Event 42" Kernal-Power

"The system is entering sleep."

"Sleep reason: System Idle"

...

I don't know why your laptop would sleep if you have all settings set to never sleep.
From an elevated command prompt run this command:
powercfg -energy

Look at the energy-report.html to see what it shows for the info i highlighted below.
I have a desktop, so you might have to also look at what it reports for "not plugged in".

I don't get it... everything is saying that my laptop is set to not sleep, turn off screen, and hard disks. Shall I upload my html file? Will it make it easier?

Yes, you can can upload the file and i'll look at it to see if i find anything that might cause the problem.

Also, you said you installed Windows.
Did you do a Clean Install or did you do a Factory Recovery ?
If you did a Factory Recovery make sure you don't have some "power management" program installed/running that might interfere with your power options settings.

2)
Run a System File Check to make sure you don't have any problems that can't be fixed:

As a temp workaround you could set the sleep timer to some crazy high number such as 3000 minutes.
That's over 2 days, so it should stay awake overnight, if it uses the power settings.

Hello,

I did a clean install. Now I'm having this problem on my main laptop too! I installed windows 8.1 on it so I can run a program that windows 7 can't and now it says it turns off my laptop because it's idle. This happens every 3 hours when not in use.

Okay, so I cannot officially upload my energy report on my main laptop but I can on my other one..

I don't know what to do anymore.. I'm just going to go to Ubuntu on them to make my life easier.

I apologize for the inconvenience but I really don't have time for this anymore and I have too many responsibilities right now to sit down and spend time on this.

Good news,

Before I posted here yesterday, I configured a few settings that I thought would work. When I gave up, I let the computer run over night and viola! It is still on and running. This is for my windows 8 laptop, haven't gotten to the other one yet. I went to the power settings and I forgot how to change the "sleep" tab in the advanced settings. By default, it said turn off PC after 180 minutes. To make my life easier, I went to the high performance power plan and reduced a few things from there. That's how I fixed it.
