hello people.... i have a question.... so ive been upgrading my dell studio 1458 laptop and so far here are my specs:

intel core i5 3.2GHZ turbo
6GB RAM
intel 6GB/s 120GB SSD
512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 540v

as you can see, my graphics card is the real bottleneck in my system... so ive been wanting to upgrade it. well since its a laptop, the only way to do it is to buy a new mother board.

when i bought my computer, i had the option of either 512mb ati or a 1GB ati graphics cards. money was tight at the time, so i chose the 512.

now my question is, what mother board do i need to be replaced with? like i search on ebay, but cant find the 1gb graphics, nor if anything i do find will fit and support and fit. i have the 1st gen i5, so it has to be that socket type. anyone know the board number i need? ive looked on dell website, but cant figure out what model studio im looking for...

Hi Quadrider10,

Following are the 'Dell-tested' motherboards that work with Studio 1458:
1. UMA (Intel integrated graphics controller)
2. Discrete GPU Chipset (PWB) with 512 mb VRAM (Currently installed in your laptop)
3. Discrete GPU PWB (1 GB)

You may want to use the 'last option' that accommodates '1 GB ATI graphics card'.
If in US, this part is built with the following 'Part Number': '205RN - PWA,PLN,OEM,DIS,PARK,1458,1G (Part number may vary if outside US). Also note that the 'board includes Media Card Reader, DDR/WLAN Mylar and CPU bracket; however, is without 'RJ45' port.

You may find the 'Service Manual' for 'Studio 1458' useful: Documentation
Note: Please ensure that you take all 'safety precautions' mentioned in the document.

Hope this helps. Do reply if yo have any further questions; would be glad to assist.

Awesome! Thank you very much! But is the CPU socket the same as a core I'm first Gen? I think pga988.

Hi Quadrider10,

The suggested 'Part Number: 205RN' is listed on the page that you shared; appears to be appropriate: Dell Studio 14 14R 1458 Motherboard 205RN | eBay

Also share if your system has the same 'processor' that was shipped with the unit; or you upgraded it. '205RN' is likely to work with the original processor.

Its 'CPU Socket Type' seems to be PGA-988; came across the following link while researching (does provide elaborate description of the component): Upper Edge Technology - Dell Studio 1458 Motherboard 205RN Same Day Shipping

If you upgraded the processor later, please share the exact 'processor details/number' so that I may look for accurate information. You may check the list of 'Previous Generation Intel Core i5 Processors' to find the one that you installed yourself (and the required socket type):Previous Generation Intel® Core

Hope this helps. Do reply if you have any further questions; would be glad to assist.

Just one thing to note, if the replacement motherboard has the same model graphics on it, the extra 512 MB of memory won't make a lick of difference to graphics performance.

For the same reason that this card,

Newegg.com - ZOTAC Synergy Edition ZT-60601-10L GeForce GT 610 2GB 64-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Low Profile Ready Video Card

isn't any faster than this one.

Newegg.com - ZOTAC ZT-60605-10L GeForce GT 610 512MB 64-bit DDR3 PCI Express x1 HDCP Ready Low Profile Ready Video Card

More memory on a video card doesn't make it faster, it makes it able to run at higher settings as there is more room to load textures and such into. It also doesn't help any on a low end card like the one above as the GPU/core isn't fast enough to make use of the extra memory.

In the case of the HD 540v in yours it is based on the older Mobility HD 4550M,

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 540v - Notebookcheck.net Tech

that itself was based on the the even older and slower desktop version, the HD 3450.

Unfortunately more memory on low end cards is nothing more than pure marketing, done to deceive and move lots of low end cards.

games like call of duty black ops, and test drive unlimited 2, i have to play on 600x800 on lowest possible textures for it to just be playable enough... ie 30fps... or lower.... i want ot get that fps up and make it more enjoyable and playable... also its the only thing i havent upgraded in this laptop. not looking for a meiricle, but something better.

If you go through with it at most you might see 5 FPS more, and not even likely that much; more like 1-2 FPS if you're lucky.

Unfortunately if you want to game on a laptop you have to plan and budget accordingly, as a laptop capable of playing the games you listed at decent settings and FPS costs a fair bit more than entry level laptops.

Be that as it may, for what those motherboards are going for and if they have the same video on them only with 1 GB of video memory you're going to be sadly disappointed by the severe lack of improvement.

hi thanks again! so that link you posted of the motherboard from ebay is the motherboard with the 1gb ati graphics card? and are you positive?

also i did upgrade the cpu. i put a first gen core i5 560m pga-988 socket type. i know 100% on that cause i bought a 2nd gen with ppga-988, and it dident fit so i had to send it back.... lol woops :p

also would these have the 1gb ati card?

Genuine Dell Studio 14 14R 1458 Motherboard System Board 205RN 0205RN CN 0205RN | eBay

and which one would be better? a used or refurbished?

Hi Quadrider10,

I have double-checked and verified that 'Part number 205RN' is designed to work with Studio 1458 and handles GPU with 1 GB VRAM.

All the following links seem to direct us to the motherboard with the same part number (205RN):
Dell Studio 14 14R 1458 Motherboard 205RN | eBay

Genuine Dell Studio 14 14R 1458 Motherboard System Board 205RN 0205RN CN 0205RN | eBay

As long as the motherboard is identified with this part number (205RN), it should work with your laptop with 1GB graphics adapter.

Hope this helps. Do reply if you have any further questions; would be glad to assist.

Hi Quadrider10,

You may upgrade the system with use of an 'ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5450 GPU'.

Hope this helps. Do reply if you have any further questions; glad to assist.

is that the same motherboard as the 205RN? or are the GPU's Different on each?

so i was looking on the dell website on driver downloads, and my computer eaither just comes with the 5450 or 4530 GPU's the 5450 is faster and has more Vmem then mine, but the 4530 is the same speed with just 1 gb instead of 512 pr what i have. so that means i have to look for a 205RN motherboard, and just ask the seller if its the 5450 or 4530 versions?
