About a day after installing windows 7 professional 64 bit on my Dell Studio 1535 (which had been running Vista home premium 64 bit), my keyboard became very cantankerous. I expect this is a driver issue, but I haven't been able to solve it. I've installed vista drivers from dell.com for various input devices (Drivers & Downloads). This managed to get the card reader working (it was the only thing 7 identified as problematic), but didn't help the keyboard.

More on the problem; all the keys still work if you type very slowly. Here's that last sentence typed at normal speed on my keyboard: orote proble;alte ks sllwork if yo tpe very slol. Right now I'm typing on a mac USB keyboard that's working fine. Also, the row of light-up controls above the keyboard (volume controls, eject, media control) no longer work. Not a big deal, I can live without those. The touch pad is also slow and jumpy, but I usually use a USB mouse.

Can anyone point me to a Vista driver for the keyboard that's in the laptop? Or help me solve this some other way? Windows 7 says that all the drivers are OK.

Type device manager in search. When you have the manager, click on all the arrows by items that you are interested in. If there is a new driver available you will see a yellow warning sticker. Is this the way you checked, already? If your drivers are ok, the obvious os left. Maybe time for a new keyboard.

Device manager says that everything is working properly. Technically, the keyboard does work if you wait ~1 second between hitting keys and push each one hard...

thanks for the suggestion, but ease of access center options are not what is messing up the keyboard.

Another quirk worth mentioning, though. If I hold in a key on the keyboard (including backspace), it won't continue that action till I let go of the key, so I have to hit the backspace key lots of times to delete something. This is not the case on the USB keyboard that I'm temporarily using while I try to fix this.

You want to dowload the Quickset application. I had a similar issue with the media keys for my XPS M1330. I'm not sure about the slowness in your keyboard though.

Quickset actually made my keyboard entirely non-functional - even after uninstalling quickset. I had to use system restore just to get back it's partial functionality.

You have all of the other drivers installed and the BIOS updated?

well now I'm not sure what I did. the track pad and keyboard still have their partial functionality as windows starts up (like when I'm signing into my account), but when everything's fully loaded, neither of them work. I've tried quite a few different restore points, but they still aren't working :(

I just realized you didn't mention how you installed Windows 7. If you did an upgrade, I would advise you to backup your data and do a clean install.

I did a clean install. You can't do an update from Vista home premium to 7 professional. But it's looking more and more like reinstalling is my only option...

FYI: After much frustration (and reverting to Vista), taking the computer apart and unplugging the keyboard and plugging it back in solved the problem. The keyboard now works wonderfully. My media keys above the keyboard are still non-functional, as is the scroll feature on my keypad, but that's livable. I was able to reinstall Windows 7 with no additional troubles.

Try the touchpad driver R244796 from dell downloads.
