I had bought Dell XPS L502x exactly 13months back. Since its an era of Flash Drives, I rarely use my DVD Drive to read/write. My DVD Drive reads most of the DVDs. But it never burned a DVD successfully. I have tried writing DVDs occassionally over last one year, and when It fails, I thought its due to the poor quality of Disc. Yesterday I tried to Burn Windows 7 ISO to a DVD to recover my PC at home. After 3 failure to write disc.
I decided to test my drive, I bought MoserBaer PRO DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-DL and Sony DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-DL.
After wasting first four DVDs in the process, I decided not to waste last 2 Sony DVDs.
I am out of Warranty. What should I do?

Hi Imrankhan,

Please check this link below to troubleshoot the DVD drive of the system:

http://dell.to/12d4Uvg

You can also create a bootable pen drive for the system following the link below:

First of all Thanks for your reply....
I know to create Bootable Windows USB Drive.
But the problem is Warranty expired, I only got to know about this faulty DVD Drive only after year. I was so stupid. I trusted Dell, But I now feel so bad.

Thanks for the troubleshooter link. After Diagnostics It found no errors. I am updated with latest firmware driver for optical disc. But It was no avail.
The link you provided tells that the drive may not support some brands of DVDs. How could I know the supported brand? Top 2 brands Moserbaer and Sony failed to support...

A small conflict identified few hours back.

Driver found on dell website for XPS L502x with service tag 78V8DT1 is "TSST TS-L633J 12.7 SATA Trayload 8X DVDRW Firmware Update"

But My device manager shows "TSSTcorpDVD+-RW SN-208BBD300". When I tried to install downloaded driver, It shows firmware is not compatible with selected drive.

Oops. I somehow managed install the driver by dragging the '.BIN' file into the Tsdnwin.exe.
Now my drive is totally dead. The drive status LED is glowing all time and drive not ejecting, 'An error occured while ejecting 'DVD/CD-RW''

Hi Sandeep. Thanks again.
Can you offer me a link to flash the DVD drive default firmware driver that is already present in it. Before I updated the original firmware present in the DVD drive, the firmware is 'TSSTcorp DVD -RW SN-208BB' version: D300
If you could provide it, I will replace the wrong firmware update with orginal one. So that My drive could atleast Read discs.

Also remove that R304507.exe, R304505.exe being showed as Firmware update for DVD Drives of XPS L502x like mine.

After searching Through Net, I found this Firmware, Can I install it.

http://drivers.windows7download.com...dd-firmware-sn-208bb-hh05/download-ynuui.html

Hi Imrankhan,

Unfortunately there is no firmware update available for this DVD drive available with us. As there are no firmware updates available for this drive we would not have the original firmware available for the drive.

And as there is a mechanical failure with the optical drive now updating the firmware might not resolve the issue we have at hand right now.

You can either use USB drive for transferring data and re-installing windows as well or get a replacement optical drive.

If you really require the optical drive then only go ahead for same. You can also buy one of them at the link below:

DELL XPS 15 (L502x) CD/DVD Internal Replacement and Upgrades | Dell

And you can find the steps for installing replacement optical drive at this link:

ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-prod...xps_laptop/xps-l502x_service manual_en-us.pdf

If you have any further queries, please feel free to contact us.

if you don't really need the drive, you can get a drive caddy and add a second hard drive. Just make sure it states compatibility (or has the right dimension)
