I was just checking out the difference between the 1155 and the 1150 sockets and came across this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadwell_(microarchitecture)

Now I was thinking of a new build in the nearish future maybe with the Haswell but saw this and am beginning to wonder where it will all end. The slope into being able to keep up looks to be getting steeper and steeper and along with the software to go with it all is making me feel a tad uncomfortable if only from a point of view that one will not be able to afford it it or keep up with each new development.

Maybe it is time to stop where I am.

Yeah, once Intel is done selling LGA CPUs, AMD is going to become king because they're going to continue selling CPUs that are not soldered to the motherboard.

Hum mate I hadn't given that a thought going on that then Intel will lose me. I can't begin to see the logic or reasoning of permanently fixing CPU's to boards - that would entail taking the whole board back out again and who in their right mind is wanting to do that?

I am left wondering what the board manufacturers are thinking about this rather nonsensical set up, because it would upset their sales too unless the board came with a detachable processor panel.

Yeah, I feel the same way. I think AMD is in my future at some point if Intel doesn't wise up and change their plans.

There's no need in upgrading from Ivy Bridge to Haswell unless there is something your current rig won't do. Also, is Intel planning on soldering ALL CPU's to the socket? I read somewhere the performance line would still be a separate socket/cpu. It was all speculation of course.

I don't remember where I learned that all CPUs will eventually be BGA. The article below doesn't say that, but it does say that starting with Broadwell (in 2014), all mainstream CPUs will be BGA:

Intel

They are speculating that this could mean that high-end desktop CPUs (like today's LGA2011 CPUs) could still be offered in LGA packaging. Unfortunately, this could be extremely expensive. As they said, at the time this article was written (November 22, 2012), the cheapest LGA2011 CPU (high-end) was $294. That was the cheapest one! As a stark contrast, the most expensiveLGA1155 CPU (mainstream) was $332. That's only $38 more than the cheapest LGA2011 CPU!

So yeah, there's no way I'll stay with Intel if this really happens because there's no way I'll ever have enough money to build a high-end system! It will be "bye-bye, Intel! Hello, AMD!" because AMD is still going to be making CPUs as we know them today.

Edit: here's the article I was trying to find: Intel To Offer Socketed CPUs Till 2016 - Skymont Onward Chips to Ship in BGA PackagesIt says that Intel will no stop producing LGA (socketed) CPUs in 2016.

Yeah, I've read quite a bit about this and I knew the lower end and probably mainstream would be changed, but their Extreme line may stay the way it is......they could change their minds, who knows. It's a dick move at any rate.

According to the 2nd article I linked above (the one I finally remembered), 2016 will see the end to all socketed CPUs from Intel. Fortunately, AMD is not going to stop producing them.

I just read this and they come up with this ridiculous explanation that being "fixed" makes the chip more efficient and faster because of shorter leads and improved thermal dissipation (trough the board??) etc etc ad nauseum as if what we have now isn't fast enough and the heat issue reasonably well under control.
Ball grid array - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I suppose in fairness there may be a place for this stuff in say a server where a board could be slipped out and replaced but for us an absolutely no brainer from Dimtel.

I am with TC if this does happen then I will be off to AMD and let Intel shoot themselves in both feet.

Again I wonder what the board manufacturers will be thinking - if it were me I would be getting a tad nervous re using Dimtel.

I am sure that the BGA design will be incorporated into a whole new product line. What I am not sure of is whether Intel intends to eliminate any future LGA product line. That seems to be the speculation of the writers, but I don't hear the words from Intel.

Keep in mind that the market is all about laptops, tablets, and phones now for these guys. The desktop PC market is pretty much an afterthought. "We have lots of exciting new stuff!!! - and, oh, yeah, we make some PC stuff too".

Thought you might like that I did some other looking round and came across this Intel Reveals the End is Near for its Desktop Motherboards it has some other rather depressing links and after spending what I consider a fair bit of my hard earned money with Dimtel over the years personally I am beginning to feel very disappointed to put it mildly I would use words that would probably get me banned but being thrown to the lions is not my idea of enjoying oneself.

It occurs to me that corporate greed and appeal to the mindless masses is the all important issue and the be all and end all for this once great company which in my mind is sinking into the pit of ultimate apathy when it comes to the likes of us who enjoy building, fixing, and generally using our computers as we know them.

So I am banking on your thoughts that AMD will take over - I don't know about you but truthfully I don't care that much if one processor is two nano seconds quicker than the next is it really that important? when really your life is measured in such a short time span anyway. Better that I can do what I do now rather than have to go along with some SA Dimtel designer and developers.

I suppose one bit of good news to come out of this will be for AMD in that some of us will swing to them maybe it is the break they need??

It could very easily be Intel is just trying to improve their motherboard sales. Most who build don't use Intel boards. I have a Intel board in my grandpa computer by choice. It works great but very limited options. I believe the all-in-one will be marketed to the PC builders like Dell, HP ect. It would improve their motherboard sales in huge numbers and the big builders will go for it with joy. We have already seen great strides in on board videos chips.
On board video chips and cpu's would make it great for big builders. Pop the motherboard in and all warranty for most things is covered by Intel as a unit. On the wrong side of the tracks we call that a (Slam bang thank you Mam)

Yeah, considering that the Intel boards were between crappy and average, that's a good move. Let ASUS/Gigabyte/Asrock/MSI/whatever do their thing.

Please note the last line Intel will continue to design and engineer chipsets.
The chipset is the heart of a mobo, and they still need one anyway unless they go the SoC way ala ARM processors.

Besides, having some moderate experience in de-soldering BGA stuff with a heatgun, I don't see why you cannot design an aftermarket socket to fit the BGA processor. You make contact on the blobs of solder instead, so what? Something like this that I think is what is used during in-house testing anyway.
Then you just shift the market of processors, instead of buying them from Intel or general sellers you buy them from a board manufacturer. Maybe providing proof that you have one of their boards to mount it on.

Oh, this seems like more of the same to me. It has more of a positive spin on it, but I think that it's still the same at its heart: it's all unclear. Although, that's normal for Intel. lol

I suppose one bit of good news to come out of this will be for AMD in that some of us will swing to them maybe it is the break they need??

But all they're saying is that they're no longer going to be making their own motherboards. I honestly couldn't care less because the only motherboards worth purchasing anyway are the ones made by companies like ASUS, Gigabyte, ASRock, etc. So, Intel's motherboards won't be missed at all. It would be like ECS or Jetway saying that they're no longer making motherboards. Most enthusiasts would be like, "lol go tell someone who cares. Your motherboards sucked anyway".

So, I'm kind of glad that they're going to be done making their own motherboards because to be honest, I find that it's easier to help someone with their system if they have a motherboard made by companies like ASUS, Gigabyte, ASRock, etc., especially if they want to do any overclocking.

Well whatever they are inclined to do from blobs of solder - in my experience a real retrograde step because whatever it is soldered in or solder on solder the material is not up to scratch as far as I am concerned as I have and I expect a lot of others will have had to fix dry joints easily oxidised solder to solder surfaces etc.

Look I am frankly past caring what they do CPU wise and if they want to make that component a soldered in job then let them because it to my simple mind makes it no better than the chipset which is already permanently fixed. The same chipset that Bob had said will still be made by these people, but who is to say that sooner or later they don't turn round and demand the board manufacturers will have to have the CPU if they want the chipsets??
I have never considered a Dimtel board I just find that this concept being forced upon the brands we do like is taking away our right of choice as their consumers and not only that makes the whole darn thing a throw away item.

I suppose in a way we have made this rod for our own backs really by demanding better and faster devices and gobbling them up as fast as they can churn them out, and giving them what is to me a monopoly. They (Dimtel) having such a following they have now have got us by the bits that hurt and it is very depressing to know like factory chickens we are going to be turned into a "product" for them to use at leisure.

I feel sorry for the generations coming on as the pleasure of building and owning machines as we have now maybe a thing of the past.
