Desktop Display Issue

For some reason, whenever I go to change the background on my desktop it automatically stretches it and won't let me save any other option such as center, fix, or tile. Why is it doing this, and how do I fix it?

Can't tell you why it's doing that, but as a workaround until you find the actual solution, just change the dimensions of the images you want as your Desktop Background and you shouldn't have any problems.

Also, you might try changing your selected options in the Screen Saver section because if you have your Pictures folder selected as the source of your Desktop Background, the images in the Pictures folder work for both Screen Saver and Desktop Background.

As a workaround until you find the actual solution, change the dimensions of the images you want as your Desktop Background and you shouldn't have any problems.

I bought the PC around a year and a half ago. It has never really displayed a problem before now.

I have never used a screen saver, so I don't believe that has anything to do with it, and no I haven't changed the dimensions of the images, if I wanted a "workaround", I would have simply done that and not come here for help. I want a solution.

Welcome to the forum KokoMats. In this forum we try to be courteous to those who are simply trying to help us solve our problems. Yes, of course you want a solution, but in the meantime, sometimes a workaround can temporarily allow you to do what you are trying to do while you are searching for an actual solution. (And sometimes there is NO solution -- so you're stuck with a workaround, or nothing.)

In regard to my screensaver suggestion --- whether or not you USE a screensaver is irrelevant --- the sizes of your images can be changed in a NUMBER OF WAYS -- one of which is through the back door, i.e. by changing the photo dimensions in the Pictures folder via the Screensaver Settings app.

This problem often occurs on HP laptops and is a known flaw on other laptops as well like Compaq.

There are a few things that you might wanna try:

Go to HP official website and look for "Wallpaper Picture Position Enabler"
File name :sp45990.exe
Run the patch.

Set your screen to native resolution.

Create a new user account and then see if the problem still persists. If it does
not there might be a problem with your system files or settings and should try to scan your system files via sfc.exe.

I didn't come here to squabble. I came here to find out why my computer was messing up and to see what competent Windows 7 aficionados could do for me.

I looked at the screen saver options it's never been used and no options were even selected for pictures or folders.

I am pretty sure there is a solution, I am just unsure as to what the solution is.

What does "native resolution" mean?

try to scan your system files via sfc.exe.

What does that mean...

sfc is system file checker. If you open an elevated command prompt, and type SFC /scannow it will scan all your system files and attempt a repair of any broken or missing ones. I doubt this is the problem, but it never hurts. Try running it 2-3 times
