Please note that Windows 7's look and handwriting is designed around SegoeUI...you might hurt yourself more than help if you change the font

i don't think you can do it from the control panel.

i think you're going to need a third-party tool. i haven't tried it myself, but it says it works in win 7, and it's free!

good luck!

or even better, try fences, they are cool, and also free - don't know how i forgot about them! they won't let you change the text colour, but they do improve legibility.

i love win7
Can I ask why this post is marked SOLVED ?

There seems to be no way in the WIN7 settings to change the desktop font COLOUR, as the FONT item allows a change of FONT STYLE but the colour options are greyed out !!
Surely, with the idea being that we are supposed to be able to make OUR desktops look the way WE want, something as basic as this should be easy.

I have searched high and low for a solution to the same problem. There seems to be no way to change the font color for desktop icons and the taskbar icons.

I am not willing to clutter up my computer with third party programs to do something that should be a trivial matter.

So much for a completely customizable OS . . .

Why does windows 7 have easy solutions to accessing complex programs but have difficult solutions for a simple change in color font on icons? My goodness, I have the same situation. I hope somebody can help, please.

You can't change the font color, but you can change it to bold, which helps the text pop out against the background better.

Icon text color is always greyscale from white to black, Windows changes it depending on background brightness, defaulting to white unless white wouuld not be clearly visible.

The icon text font and a great many other aspects of the window appearace can be changed at:
Control Panel -> Personalize -> Window Color -> Advanced

Hope this helps.

Also ASRock ION 330 as HTPC (on XP).
Acer Aspire as GP netbook (on XP).

Where did you get that idea? It stays white on a black drop shadow no matter what.

Edit: Never mind. It seems one has to log off and on again - at least sometimes - to see this change.

Turn off drop shadows

One of the Visual Effects you can tweak under Control Panel -> System -> Advanced System Settings -> Performance
is "Use Drop Shadows for Icons on the desktop" (in my version of Windows 7, this is the second last item). Turning it off gives me a satisfactory result; the desktop icons now look good against my light-colored solid background. The change took effect immediately.

It IS possible...

Microsoft states that it is not possible to change the icon font color in Windows 7. This is not entirely true. It IS possible using a 3rd party program (Iconoid 3.8.6). You must first turn off the drop shadow effect in order to use this program, but the effect is to give control of this parameter back to the computer owner.
I understand Microsofts reasoning in doing what they did with this font color option, but to say that it is not possible to accomplish a color change is just flat out wrong. Further, if MS wanted to they could have easily left this option available to their users, but as we all know, Microsoft knows best:sarc:

Actually Solved

This is very simple to do with no 3rd party program. You just gotta know how to :)

Personalize > Windows Color > Advanced Settings > select DESKTOP (not icon...)
and change the color there, if you set it to black, icon font will be white and vice versa.
