Desktop icons after Safe mode. Really?

Had all my desktop icons neatly organized. Then used safe mode to try installing something. Back to normal mode and icon positions are all lost! This is so ridiculous it makes one dislike M$ even more than ever. Why do the simplest things in Windows either not exist or don't work at all, 25 years later?

If you put your shortcuts into a toolbar rather than spreading them on the desktop, then you don't have that problem.

Thanks. Iconoid, yes I used that years ago. Toolbars, I think I shall add one or two. That's essentially just multiple Start menus though. The desktop & icons is a good idea but has it zero features and never works right which is why everyone clutters it up into a useless scrambled mess. Microsoft is just really, really stupid.
