Desktop Icons changed to "Filezilla"

Hello,

Yesterday the icons for desktop "files" (not shortcuts) all changed to the Filezilla icon. I have tried rebuilding the iconcache.db and its does not fix the problem. I have been troubleshooting and it appears that the icons are all correct up until explorer.exe loads, then they all blank out, come back normal, and then the Filezilla logo looks to overlay on top of the normal icon.

I am running Win 7 64 bit SP1 with 16 GB memory, Core i7.

Thoughts?

Barb

The file types are .doc, .xls, .jpg., .pdf. The only pattern I can see is that they are files and not shortcuts. The icons are fine until explorer loads, then they get changed. I've attached a screenshot of the desktop.

The desktop is presented to the user by Windows (file) Explorer... so, Explorer is already loaded. Are you saying that the desktop looks normal until you open a Windows (file) Explorer window? Doing that, should not even start another copy of explorer.exe. It usually reuses the copy that is showing you the desktop.

See here: Default File Type Associations - Restore.

Use the ones for doc, xls, jpg and pdf (and any other file types that are wrong).
Good link/thought.

Now you have made me curious. The OP did not say that the items failed to open correctly (or maybe I missed it), but that is a distinct possibility. I wonder if some explorer add-on is causing only the icons to change and not the program associations. Either way, it is a good link to add to the thread :-)

Possible uninstalling FileZilla will fix this too.

The files open correctly. Its not "internet explorer" that is causing the problem so its not an add-on issue (if that is what you meant). It's the windows explorer.exe. I've run sfc /scannow and there are no file errors. and its weird that all of the icons are correct until explorer.exe loads on startup.

I also just tried copying an excel file from a directory to the desktop and sure enough, it picked up the filezilla icon? Very odd.

I'm debating updating to Windows 10. Thoughts?

There might be a less confusing term than "add-on". Apps like FileZilla add a DLL or two to Windows (file) Explorer. Those DLLs are what make stuff happen from the right-click context menus.

You said, "...all of the icons are correct until...". As I tried to covey in my first post, if you can see desktop icons, then Explorer has already loaded. Explorer is the app that shows you the desktop. Perhaps the FileZilla DLLs don't do their thing until an Explorer window is opened. That Explorer window should be the exact same process that is showing you the desktop - before and after the icon change.

Yes - I rebuilt the cache per this instruction several times. Working on debugging startup
