Solved Desktop icons randomly disappear

Every once in awhile the Show Desktop Icons option gets unchecked randomly. I have to reenable it. Seems more common on x64 then x32. In both cases using 7 Pro. Any suggestions to keep it enabled permanently as it is a random issue?

It could be anything. You could be using a program that changes the setting somehow. Did you do any "hacks", like change registry settings?

No I did not. It only happens randomly. usually occurs sometime between clicking the shutdown button and logging in. I don't think I have anything else that touches it.

So you shutdown your computer, and on resume, the icons disappear?

They never load on resume. I login to a blank desktop.

Temporary Fix

It worked temporarily for me and then it happened again... Any other suggestions. I have also run a sfc/scannow and it didn't find anything.

Hi guys,

I found the cause of the misteriously disappearing Windows 7 desktop icons and the reason why Show desktop icons now and then gets unchecked.

It’s INFRARECORDER !! Try for yourselves, when you start Infrarecorder and close it again, go have a look at “Show desktop icons”, it is unchecked (but the icons are still there). Check it on again and start Infrarecorder…. it is unchecked again.

This Windows 7 “bug” is irritating me since the beginning and now I found the cause: It’s Infrarecorder which is causing this problem.

Test it, please let me know and spread the news

These shortcuts are regarded as broken and are deleted by the System Maintenance troubleshooter.

The System Maintenance troubleshooter performs a weekly maintenance of the operating system. The System Maintenance troubleshooter either fixes problems automatically or reports problems through Action Center. When there are more than four broken shortcuts on the desktop, the System Maintenance troubleshooter automatically removes all broken shortcuts from the desktop.
