Solved Desktop icons superimposed

Hi Guys

For some reason about 50% of my desktop icons have had the attached icon superimposed upon them - they are there, but just covered with this.

Does anyone have any ideas please?

Thanks Bongo, I followed your suggestion jumped through quite a few hoops and needed to repeat steps along the way, but got there in the end.
