Last week, my friend has successfully replaced my mobo (Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3) to his older one (Gigabyte GA-H55M-UD2H) temporary. The reason for this is because there is a problem with my mobo and thus I need to RMA it and the Gigabyte rep told me it will take two weeks or so to get it fixed and returned.
Now, ignoring small problems (such as audio pops, random beeping caused by this old mobo etc) everything was working fine until yesterday all of sudden the computer starts shutting down immediately without any warnings. It happens on random occasion (such as when idling, gaming or straight after when I turn on my desktop etc...) with no specific pattern whatsoever. To give an idea, for three hours span it shuts down for about 7 times.
Every time when it shuts down, the screen freezes for about couple of seconds and ultimately it shuts down completely. Time to time instead of shutting down. it will restart and whenever it restarts/boot again manually it will boot normally with the option to choose to start in safe mode or normally before windows logo appear. As a result, the process repeats with no ways to determine when/how the shut down happens.
I've tried to contact my friend again and he said the problem was mostly caused by the mobo itself and thus the only solution is either replace it with "another" mobo or get another PC/laptop until my mobo arrives... or put up with the random shut down since it doesn't "harm" my computer greatly which I think it's pretty ridiculous if you ask me.
As a result, I tried searching for some solutions via various forums and most of them seems to be in different situation and the software solutions (such as updating BIOS, reinstalling drivers, unplug all of the external devices, uninstall any recent programs etc) didn't really help much as the shutdown still happens.
With no solutions working in terms of software related stuff, I switched my attention to BIOS itself and without thinking too much I've changed the SATA mode from AHCI to IDE from BIOS menu. Afterwards, Windows started normally and it installed the devices successfully. After restarting, I've tried using the computer for a while and it didn't shut down randomly... I've switched back to AHCI (from BIOS again) and I haven't had random shutdown ever since then (its been around 7~9 hours).
I'm not sure if the random shut down will happen again but it seems like switching the SATA modes "fixed" the shutdown problem, though I'm not going to put too much faith in it...
