Desktop "locks"?

Hi,

So I made the mistake of installing VMWare to my desktop - Long story short I was trying to unpack all the files that get installed and I selected Desktop thinking it would make a new folder when instead it just dumped its files all over my desktop.

Well anyway, everything already on there immediately got a "lock" icon. I understand that it has to do with sharing - meaning the file isn't being shared and whatnot. I fixed it by selecting the stuff with locks, right-clicking, Sharing, then adding "Everyone" to the list with read/write privileges.

Well everything that I download to my desktop since that incident has a lock icon that I have to manually go remove with the sharing option. I've set the actual Desktop folder to "Everyone read/write" plenty of times now, but yet new files still aren't being shared.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Easiest way is to use an system image to rollback to a time prior to your problem.

Except that I've installed quite a few other things since then and it would probably do more harm than good.

Make an image of your system (use acronis or macrium reflex). Then roll back to an earlier time. Does more harm than good, replace with the image that you just made.

or

You could roll back to that earlier time and replace what you need when you need it. No real harm done, other than inconvenience.

My advice will work, but it will be a PIA. You have 2 other choices you can leave it the way it is or you can wait until someone with more knowledge in this area comes along. There are members of this forum that are really experts.

Whatever you chose, make frequent updates with system image. Once a week is good or whenever you make a big change. Do that and you will never have this problem again.

You don't know if your system made a restore point b4 you installed this program?

On the other hand you can go into your system restore and take your self back to an earlier setting.

It DID make a restore point, but I installed a few other things since then, wouldn't it just screw those up? (Like when I then UNinstalled VMWare and reinstalled it to the correct folder, etc.)

No it should not screw anything up, they are just history and you have to reinstall.

But once again, make a copy of your HD now. Then after you use SR, if you are not happy just restore from the image.

Seeing as how my hard drive is 500GB, it'll take several hours at least... so I'll do it tonight before I go to sleep I guess, otherwise it's just eating my resources alive.
