Does it stay like that after restarting the computer or logging out and in?

If so, you might see if changing the icon of that shortcut to a different or same icon a couple of time may sort it.

All the icons are like that on the desktop.

This is an artifact of being able to operate the desktop by keyboard. It happens for me every so often. To get rid of it, I hit Ctrl-Esc to bring up the start menu, cursor down (no mouse!) to some program or other, hit Enter to launch it. Usually, after I close that program, the rectangle goes away - what you've done is taken keyboard focus away from that desktop item. Then, a few days later it pops up again - I can't figure out what triggers it.

It is a long-standing bug, and nobody seems to want to do anything about it. It happens in Windows post-7 as well.

Nar, it's completely safe. I'd recommend to use OPTION ONE to make it easy. It only deletes the cache to have Windows automatically recreate it and load the icons to the cache again. This is necessary if the cache had become corrupted.

I agree. The Windows Defender issue is more serious, and should be sorted first since malware or a virus could be the cause of it.

I'm not sure if rebuilding the icon cache is really necessary. The rectangle is just showing keyboard focus - it indicates that the item is selected, and that hitting Enter would open it. You just need to find a way to yank the focus somewhere else. I have a tiny little program called 'mbuptime' (which, um, reports your uptime), which loads practically instantly. I keep it on the top of my start menu. So Ctl-Esc, one cursor down, Enter, and it's all good

Actually, oddly enough, sometimes it takes two tries. Anyway, I'm sure there are other recipes out there. It is a bit of annoyance, though, and I wish MS would address it. It's been around for years and years.

It has an arrow because it`s a shortcut. Brink should have a tut to remove it, and there are many programs to remove it.

Best thing is to remove the icons from your desktop, there is no reason to have any icons on the desktop with a taskbar and a start menu and a Documents folder etc etc etc........

I thought Rose was referring to them being selected, but if she did mean the shortcut arrow overlay on the icon, then the tutorial below can remove them.

Rose, all that means is that you highlighted or hovered over the icon, it`s totally normal for the icon to do that.

Why is there a Skype icon on your desktop anyway, if you use it alot just pin it to the taskbar or the start menu and delete it off the desktop
