Information about a recent change in billing for Office 365 monthly subscriptions

  • Recently, Microsoft made your monthly subscription billing and renewal date the same. Now your monthly subscription will be billed on the same day it renews.
  • Previously, you were billed on the same day each month - even if your subscription renewed days or weeks earlier. These different dates led to a lot of customer confusion, especially around cancellation and when you would get your final charge.
You may get billed sooner than expected

  • Before this change occurred, our systems waited to bill you days or weeks after your subscription renewed each month. Now your billing and renewal date are the same, and you could see a one-time sooner-than-expected charge for your next renewal. Please understand that we haven’t charged you twice for the same month. Going forward, you’ll only be billed on the renewal date each month.
Why are we making this change?

  • With this change, there will be no more confusion between when you are billed vs. when your subscription renews. If for some reason you cancel your subscription, and decide to purchase again in the future, you can choose which day you get billed for your monthly subscription by purchasing it on the desired date.
  • We hope these changes make it easier to understand your monthly billing charges for our products and services. Thank you for being a loyal Microsoft customer!
Common Questions and Answers:

Question: Is Microsoft billing me twice for the same month of service?
Answer: No, based on your billing date, we formerly charged you after your subscription renewed each month. When we moved your billing date to align with your renewal date, we just moved the charge from within the current month to the beginning of the month going forward. From this point forward, you’ll get billed on the same day your monthly subscription renews.

Question: Is this a one-time sooner-than-expected charge, or will this happen again next month?
Answer: This is a one-time event. From this point on we’ll bill you on the day your subscription renews.
