Hi pieren,

You may try a 'Clean Boot'; it is likely to help you in isolating the culprit. Please refer to the following 'web article': How to perform a clean boot to troubleshoot a problem in Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8

If you are using a notebook; and an external mouse is also connected, unplug it and check for the 'sound again'. While researching, I came across a similar situation in another thread where unplugging an external mouse fixed the issue. You may also give it a shot, if applicable.

Hope this helps.

No, I am not using a netbook, so I don't think that the mouse is the problem.

Follow this completely.
To better help us to help you would you please add your systems specs? Here's how:SystemInfo See Your System Specs Under System Manufacturer/Model Number add whether it is a desktop or laptop and whether self built. Very important

Log in to Seven Forums and you will be able to transfer the info directly to the specs page in your profile from within the System Info app.

After doing this your specs will be available in each of your posts.
Click on My system Specs in the lower left of this post to see how it should look.:)
Full instructions are in the tutorial.

Thanks. Have you at some point connected a USB device of any kind?
Let's verify it is the Failed to Connect sound. Go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Sounds and click the Sounds tab.
In the drop-down menu, as shown, select None/Apply. Reboot and see if the sound is gone.

Yes, it is actually the Failed to Connect sound.
I haven't added any new USB device, all devices are apparently working fine.

The only other thing I can think of is that one USB port or connector is bad and making/breaking contact. If you have extra USB cables, swap them around to see if that helps.

Did you try a Clean Boot as Saurabh A suggested?

Hi pieren,

As suspected by 'Britton30', it could be a deteriorating 'USB port/connector'; did you try isolating any such possibility?

Apart from a 'clean boot', you may also try the following step:
- Go to 'Device Manager' > Expand 'USB Controllers' category > Right-click to uninstall all 'USB Root Hubs' one-by-one > Go to 'Action' in 'File Menu' > 'Scan for Hardware Changes' > Functionality of all 'USB Root Hubs' will be restored automatically > Restart the computer and check results.

Hope this helps.
