Solved Device manager blank?

Nothing, empty!

I followed these tips here Device Manager empty or blank in Windows?

in "Permissions for Enum" I can see SYSTEM, Everyone and "OWNERS RIGHTS" whats that doing there I am the onwer

Dear Gazutoids,
Let us set right a "critical" service which might have been turned off. Follow this fix.
" Under start>search programs and files, type devmgmt.msc if still no go, do the following, under search programs and files type mmc /a and a console box would appear, under file menu choose add/remove snap in, under available snap in, choose device manager follow by add and if you're prompted to choose "snap in will always manage" choose local computer follow by next and hit ok to leave the console box" Courtesy: My Device manager is empty

Next try going to device manager and verify if it's is working.

Dear Gazutoids,
Sorry that the above method did not fix! The other cause for a Blank Device Manager is a corrupted key in the Registry. Before i detail the steps to rectify (Thanks to Microsoft Help), kindly carefully read and follow this tutorial of SevenForums: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/19449-default-file-type-associations-restore.html

The above tutorial will help you IN CASE the steps outlined below are not followed to the letter. It helps you to restore the registry!

Now, to the actual steps;
1. Click Start-> Run->type in regedit.exe.


2. Locate the following: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum

3. Now right-click on Enum and choose Permissions.


4. Click the Add button and type in Everyone and click OK. Check the Allow box next to Read for Everyone.
Now click Add again and type in System.
Check the Allow box next to Read and Full Control for System. It should look like this:
5. Both the check boxes under Allow should be selected when you highlight System.
Also be sure to click on the Advanced button after adding both users and selecting Reset permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects.
Click OK.
Restart your computer now and check if the issue persists.

Yes tried this solution too, "Everyone" and "System" already there and checked as is....also showing in the box is "Owners rights"....when I try check the box in advanced I get the line "unable to save permission changes to enum...access denied"

I installed windows I'm the only user so that makes me the administrator yes?

I logged in as administrator (different icon to user) ....device manager still blank

Dear gazutoids,
when you install Win.7, you are by default NOT the Admin. You have to enable the 'Hidden Admin.account". That's a secret i share with you! That's why the tutorial reference.

I think I get what you're saying sreedhav.....but what I'm saying is I followed the tutorial and enabled Administor account ...I got 2 login screen Administrator and my user account ......device manager is still empty in both, thanks for your suggestions though, much appreciated

Dear gazurtoids,
Under "Advanced" try this tack:

On the Advanced window select user 'SYSTEM' and then

. On the Advanced window check "Reset permissions on all child objects..." (lowest checkbox)
. Click "OK"
. On the warning window click "Yes"
. Close REGEDT32 (don't forget ok or apply)


If this too does not set things right, we will have to think of "Malware".

Dear gazurtoids,
Now we have to check for Malware as i suggested in a previous post!
1) Download SAS Portable scanner and just run(no need to update) : SUPERAntiSpyware.com - SUPERAntiSpyware Portable Scanner
Fix any Malware.
2) Then, download MBAM(select the free version,update and run) : Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware PRO removes malware including viruses, spyware, worms and trojans, plus it protects your computer
If Malware found, it will prompt you as to how to fix it/them.

After MBAM, let us run a On-line Virus Scanner (select the 32 OR 64-bit) : HouseCall - Free Online Virus Scan - Trend Micro USA

Thanks Sreedhav......ran the programmes as you suggested, many threats found and removed......no fix with device manager

Dear gaz,
What AV have you installed (originally) on the system?Update and run.

Some Trojans and Virii are very hard to remove, so kindly re-run MBAM and the free version of SuperAntiSpyware which you can download from (install,update and kindly run): SUPERAntiSpyware.com | Remove Malware | Remove Spyware - AntiMalware, AntiSpyware, AntiAdware!

If the Trojans are still lurking, remove them. Re-run! If still present, we will have to think of downloading an .iso image of your version of Win.7 and install (called-"biting the bullet"). Let us follow the trail!

Can you also post the logs of what viruses were found? Malwarebytes is nice about keeping logs, so just compress (zip) the logs up and upload them for us to take a look at. It would be good to know the severity of your virus/malware infection.
